Me:

Good morning, Behavior Improvement, Inc. Kaitlin speaking, how may we assist you today?

Mrs. Jacobs:

Hello Kaitlin, my name is Mrs. Jacobs and I am reaching out to you today after receiving your clinics

brochure from my child’s pediatrician. I am hoping that you will be able to assist me during my search for a

qualified ABA service provider for my son.

Me:

Yes, we here at behavior improvement inc. are focused on providing ABA services to our clients and

assisting potential clients on their search to the best fit service for their needs.

Mrs. Jacobs:

My son was diagnosed at age three with Autism spectrum disorder. We have struggled to find a professional

to assist us with his behavioral needs. Can you tell me about your services and what your clinic would have

to offer?

Me:

I would be pleased to do so. What exactly would you like to know?

Mrs. Jacobs:

Well, what about the certifications required to operate your business?

Me:

Let me assure that all our staff is currently certified or is working towards their certification under the

required accordance of the Behavioral Analyst Certification Board (BACB). The newest of our staff to the

field are at minimum working towards their Registered Behavior Tech (RBT) certifications, which means

they are at minimum 18 years of age, hold a high school diploma or equivalency, can pass a criminal

background check, have completed 40 hours of training and can pass the RBT competency assessment and

exam. Under the requirements of the BACB, I have successfully completed the required credentials to
obtain my license as a board-certified behavior analyst. This certification ensures that I have proven myself

competent for working alongside individuals and their families while providing alternative options for

bettering problem behaviors. The BCBA certification requires a graduate’s degree in ABA, 1,500 hours of

supervised independent fieldwork, 1,000 hours at a supervised practicum or 750 hours at a supervised

intensive practicum, and completion of relevant coursework from an accredited university[ CITATION The19 \l

1033 ].

Mrs. Jacobs:

That is good that you have the credentials and experience necessary for this field. That makes me feel more

comfortable in having my child be treated at Behavior Inc. Can you tell me about the different approaches

that you use during treatment?

Me:

Absolutely! We offer a variety of services to suit the needs of our clients. This is because there is no single

treatment that works for all cases associated with ASD. Some of our treatment focuses are on:

 Behavior and Communication Approaches

 Dietary Approaches

 Medication

 Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

With each of these approaches we use specific training tools and methods to achieve the overall goal of

our reasons for treatment. A few of the training tools used at behavior inc. are:

 Discrete Trial Training (DTT)- This approach breaks down lessons into the simplest parts and

uses positive reinforcement to encourage change in behavior.

 Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) – used for children between the ages of 3 and 5.

Encourages a reduction in unwanted behaviors and enhances the skill strengths to help build

positive behaviors in areas such as social communication. This training is 1v1 with the child and

trainer.
 Early Start Denver Model (ESDM)- Primarily used with children under the age of two, to begin

skill training in areas/ milestones showing deficiency for age.

 Pivotal Response Training (PRT)- used to enhance a child’s motivation to learn by teaching them

skills used to monitor their own behaviors and their communication with others.

 Verbal Behavior Intervention (VBI)- focused on enhancing an individual’s verbal strengths and

abilities.

The technologies we implement during treatment are:

 Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) which is a system that uses picture symbols

and images to teach communication skills.

 Communication boards

 Electronic devices such as tablets and computers

Not to forget, we also work alongside other therapist that specify in fields such as occupational

therapy, speech therapy, and physical therapy [ CITATION CDC19 \l 1033 ].

Mrs. Jacobs:

You offer a variety of services! I am impressed but still have questions. In your brochure I see a

section on behaviorism and mentalism. What is this section about?

Me:

That is a great question! Behaviorism is an approach of psychology that focuses on the idea that all behavior

is a direct result of the environment (McLeod, 2017). This approach was developed by John Watson who is

responsible for the most contribution to the development of methodological behaviorism. Watson rejected

the mentalist methods of psychology, which were directly influenced by the idea that mental phenomena,

such as thinking, and feeling were the cause of behavior. Mentalism held the belief that mental phenomena is

not able to be reduced to physical or physiological phenomena. Watson referred to behaviorism as the

science of behavior. He used classical conditioning in his work, which is learning through association. B.F.

Skinner is another known individual for his contributions to the approach of behaviorism in psychology. He

developed the theory of operant conditioning and is notorious for the development of radical behaviorism.
Radical behaviorism can be described as the result of learned associations between a stimulus and a

response.

Mrs. Jacobs:

That is interesting information. Can you explain more to me about your ethical obligations to your clients

and your career?

Me:

I would be pleased to do so. We follow the code of ethics used specifically by the behavior analyst

certification board. Each section in this code of ethics focuses on specific areas of interests between clients

and professionals.

 Section 1: Responsible Conduct of Behavior Analysts

 Section 2: Behavior Analysts’ Responsibility to Clients

 Section 3: Assessing Behavior

 Section 4: Behavior Analysts and the Behavior-Change Program

 Section 5: Behavior Analysts as Supervisors

 Section 6: Behavior Analysts’ Ethical Responsibility to the Profession of Behavior Analysts

 Section 7: Behavior Analysts’ Ethical Responsibility to Colleagues

 Section 8: Public Statements

 Section 9: Behavior Analysts and Research

 Section 10: Behavior Analysts’ Ethical Responsibility to the BACB

Each of these sections help to protect the client’s individual rights, their privacy, medical information, and the

professionals that they work with. It is up to us to maintain client confidentiality, understand relationship

boundaries, respect the specifics for working as a behavior analyst as well as working alongside other

behavior analysts and the competency you must have in the field in order to work with clients and other

professionals [ CITATION Beh20 \l 1033 ].

Mrs. Jacobs:
I only have two questions left for you. How will the information be collected for my son’s treatment and how

do we qualify for your treatment program?

Me:

Mrs. Jacobs, let me assure you that we accept most medical insurances. Some private insurances may require a

referral before they will cover the costs of treatment, however we do offer a care credit which is a finance

opportunity to cover treatment costs. As for data collection, we will always uphold our responsibility to

protect your child’s information. We record data starting with a baseline to ensure that we have data to

compare during the evaluation process and to further research for other professionals. Information recorded

will be displayed in graphs but will only be used for informational and treatment purposes.

Mrs. Jacobs:

Thank you for your time and for providing me with all of this information. I will be in contact with you again

soon so that we can discuss treatment options for my son. I look forward to speaking with you again.

Me:

It has been my pleasure and I look forward to working with you and your son in the future. Thank you for

considering us to help with all your behavioral needs.
