Charts Using A Sample Size of N 5. Data For 20 Preliminary Samples Are Shown in Table 6E.2

This document contains exam questions about statistical process control charts. It includes questions about setting up X-bar and R control charts using sample data, estimating process parameters, determining if a process is in statistical control, calculating process capability, and probabilities related to detecting shifts in process means and standard deviations. The questions cover topics like control chart limits, process specifications, fraction nonconforming, type I error rates, and average run lengths.

ISE 318- Recitation Questions 5 07.11.

2014

6.2. The net weight (in oz) of a dry bleach product is to be monitored by x́ and R control
charts using a sample size of n=5. Data for 20 preliminary samples are shown in table 6E.2.

a) Set up x́ and R charts using these data. Does the process exhibit statistical control ?

b) Estimate the process mean and standart deviation.

c) Does fill weight seem to follow a normal distribution ?

d) If the specifications are at 16.2 ±0.5, what conclusions would you draw about process
capability ?

e) What fraction of containers produced by this process is likely to be below the lower
specification limit of 15.7 oz ?

6.15. Samples of n=4 items each are taken from a process at regular intervals. A normally
distributed quality characteristic is measured, and x́ and s values are calculated for each
sample. After 50 samples, we have

50 50

∑ x́ i=1000 and ∑ s i=72

i=1 i=1

a) Compute control limits for the x́ and s control charts

b) Assume that all points on both charts plot within the control limits . What are the natural
tolerance limits of the process?
c) If the specifications limits are 19 ± 4.0 , what are your conclusions regarding the ability of
the process to produce items conforming to specifications? (= What is the process
capability?)
d) Assuming that if any item exceeds the upper specification limit (USL) it can be reworked,
and if it is below the lower specification limit (LSL), it must be scrapped, what percent scrap
and rework is the process now producing?
e) If the process were centered at μ=19.0, what would be the effect on percent scrap and
rework ?

6.22. An x́ chart is used to control the mean of a normally distributed quality characteristic.
It is known that σ =6 and n=4. The center line=200, UCL=209, and LCL=191. If the
process mean shifts to 188, find the probability that this shift is detected on the first
subsequent sample.

6.41. An x́ chart with three-sigma limits has parameters as follows:

UCL=104

Center line=x́=100

LCL=96

n=5

Suppose that process quality characteristic being controlled is normally distributed with a
true mean of 98 and a standart deviation of 8. What is the probability that the control chart
would exhibit lack of control by at least the third point plotted ?

6.49. The following x́ and s charts based on n=4 have shown statistical control:

x́ chart s chart

UCL=710 UCL=18.08

Center line=700 Center line=7.979

LCL=690 LCL=0

a) Estimate the process parameters μandσ .

b) If the process specifications are at 705 ±15, and the process output is normally
distributed, estimate the fraction nonconforming.

c) For the x́ chart, find the probability of a type I error, assuming σ is constant.

d) Suppose process mean shifts to 693 and the standart deviation simultaneously shifts to
12. Find the probability of detecting this shift on the x́ chart on first subsequent sample.

e) For the shift of part d) find the average run length.
