Report Guidelines - How to write a Tutorial Report
for AMME 5202
J. A. Geoghegan
This document provides an outline of the required sections for the tutorial report sub-
mission which are mandatory for students attempting to obtain full marks from this
component of the course (and learn how to format reports in general).
Essentials
Normally a proper laboratory report will have several sections detailing almost every
aspect of the experiment undertaken meticulously. Thankfully, in this subject you are
only required to provide the core components as 90% of this tutorial is to demonstrate
your ability to use ANSYS Fluent and understand CFD. As such the following sections
are mandatory;
Title This is very straight forward. It is expected that you put the unit code (AMME
5202), and the tutorial number.
Name Please put your name and SID on the report. (so we know that we aren’t
receiving papers from ghosts)
Aim This is just a standard outline of the task that is being undertaken, for example;
To investigate the coefficient of lift of a cow in a Hurricane. Clearly state what it
is that you are attempting.
Setup This section should simply contain the initial conditions and boundary conditions
used in your solution, as well as grid sizes used, residual range, solver order (1st or
2nd), and so on.
Results Include all necessary figures, tables and relevant information. In this part of
the report you are answering a bulk of the required questions for hand-in. To
following information should accompany each type of result;
2D Plots: x-y axis labels and a legend, label/title
Contour/Streamline/Velocity Plots: legend/colourbar for the relevant quan-
tity, and a figure label/title
Table: clear table headers with units where appropriate, label/title
Please try and refer to all the figures and tables you use. For example:
In Figure 1 there is a shock boundary around the front of the cow which expands
further down the body.
Figure 1: Velocity Magnitude Profile of a Cow in a Hurricane
Conclusion Conclude the report by stating briefly what was achieved for this labora-
tory, a couple of sentences at most.
Marking
Provided that your report contains these headings, and the figures are appropriately
labelled, you will be awarded 1 mark, the other 9 marks will be based on the specific
tutorial requirements.
If some details are missing, for example; no axes on an x-y plot, missing figure/table
labels, missing section, then 0.5 marks will be awarded.
If you do not use the format provided in this document, you will be given 0 out of a
possible 1 mark for the report section.
If you have any questions on the report structure, do not hesitate to ask the tutors during
the tutorials or post your queries on the eLearning (Blackboard) discussion board. The
purpose of these reports are to get you used to a consistent and clear format for presenting
your findings, we want you to get the mark so if you’re unsure, check with us.
