4th Lecture Semester 2 Oscilloscope (4)

Dual Trace OSC.

There are two separate vertical input channels A and B, and these use separate attenuator and
preamplifier stage. Then the two channels meet at an electronic switch which has the ability to pass one
channel only at a time into vertical deflection plates via main vertical amplifier and delay line.

Dual Beam OSC.

The dual beam oscilloscope has two separate electron beams and therefore two completely
separate vertical channels and may have a common time base system.

Special Purpose Oscilloscope

1- Sampling Oscilloscope
It is used to examine very fast signals. Samples are taken at different portions of the waveform
over successive cycles and then total picture is stretched, amplified and displayed as continuous wave
at the screen.
The disadvantage, it can only make measurement on repetitive waveform of up (300MHz).

2- Analog Storage Oscilloscope

Storage oscilloscope capable of retaining the image on the screen for longer time than that
possible with conventional high persistence phosphors oscilloscope. It is used to storage of
transients and the steady display of a very low frequency signal.
When electrons beam strikes the target it emits secondary electrons which are gathered by the
collector.

4th Lecture Semester 2 Oscilloscope (4)

The collector is at a positive potential of V2 and the target is at a varied potential of V1, while
electron gun is grounded.
1- If V1>V2 the secondary electrons emitted from the target are attached back (written).
2- If V2>V1 all electrons from the gun are deflected on the collector before they reach the target
(erased).
3- Digital Storage Oscilloscope(DSO)
It uses an analog-to digital converter (ADC) to convert the voltage being measured into digital
information. The digitizing scope acquires the waveform as a series of samples. It stores these
samples until it accumulates enough samples to describe a waveform, and then re-assemble the
waveform for viewing on the screen.

4- Digital Phosphor Oscilloscope(DPO)

It is a digitizing scope that faithfully emulates the best display attributes of analog scope and
provides the benefits of digital acquisition and processing as well.

Different Between Analog and Digital Oscilloscope
1- Analog scope is preferred when it is important to display rapidly varying signals in real time (as
they occur).
2- Digitizing storage scope allows capturing and viewing events that may happen only once
(transients).
3- Digital phosphor scope is equally suitable for viewing high frequencies or low repetitive
waveforms, transients, and signal variations in real time.
