Jesus’ Crucifixion and Resurrection

Bible Story: Matthew 26–28; 1 Corinthians 15
Key Passage: 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you
have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
1 Peter 5:10
Big Picture Question: Who is in control of everything? God is in control of everything in heaven
and on earth.
Bottom Line: Jesus died and rose again so that we will never die and will live forever with and for
Him.
Christ Connection: Jesus’ death and resurrection is the center of the gospel. In Adam, we were
spiritually dead in sin, but Jesus died to pay for our sins. Jesus is alive! God gives new life to
everyone who trusts in Jesus.

Leader Notes:
CONTEXT
Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection are essential to the Christian faith. If we teach Jesus as a
respected teacher and miracle-worker who claimed to be the Messiah and who was crucified on
the cross—but who was not resurrected—then we are teaching the Jesus of Judaism. If we teach
Jesus as a wise teacher and prophet who ascended into heaven—but who was not crucified—
then we are teaching the Jesus of Islam.

Jesus’ purpose for coming to earth was to save us from our sins. (Matt. 1:21) Jesus came to die to
show God’s love to us (Rom. 5:7-8) so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have
eternal life. (John 3:16) Jesus came to die so that we would be forgiven. (Eph. 1:7) Jesus came to
die to bring us to God. (1 Pet. 3:18)

Jesus died on the cross to satisfy the wrath of God toward sin. His resurrection proved that God
was satisfied with Jesus’ sacrifice. If Jesus had died but not been raised up, He would have been
like military leaders who died without a throne. (Acts 5:33-37) But Jesus conquered death, just as
He said He would. (John 2:19-21) If there was no resurrection, Paul says, our faith would be
worthless. We would be dead in our sins. (1 Cor. 15:17)

But Jesus’ resurrection gives us hope for our resurrection. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from
the dead will raise our bodies to life. (Rom. 8:11)

Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection are not the end of the story, but the center of it. As you teach
kids this Bible story, emphasize the gospel: the good news of who Jesus is and what He has
done. We do not worship a dead Savior. Jesus is alive! There is hope for sinners. Jesus’
resurrection gives believers the promise of new life. “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will
be made alive” (1 Cor. 15:22).

TEACHING FOCUS (Matthew 26–28; 1 Corinthians 15)

As you point kids to Jesus, focus on the empty tomb. Because Jesus’ death and resurrection is
the center of the gospel, the empty tomb proves that Jesus is who He said He was. Jesus died a
real, painful death on the cross to pay for our sins. God hates sin so much that He gave His Son
to overcome it. After Jesus died, they placed Him in a tomb where many thought His body
would remain forever but after three days, He rose again. The tomb was empty. Because of this,
Jesus offers us forgiveness and life. The empty tomb reminds us that Jesus died and rose again
so that we will never die and will live forever with and for Him.

Christ Connection: Jesus’ death and resurrection is the center of the gospel. In Adam, we were
spiritually dead in sin, but Jesus died to pay for our sins. Jesus is alive! God gives new life to
everyone who trusts in Jesus.
Bottom Line: Jesus died and rose again so that we will never die and will live forever with Him.

Today’s Takeaways
 The story of Easter is about God’s love for you and His hatred of sin.
 God sent His Son to the cross to pay for our sins and to offer us life.
 Bottom Line: Jesus died and rose again so that we will never die and will live forever with
and for Him.
 What we believe about Jesus gives us life forever with God in Heaven and it gives us a God-
honoring life to live today.

PRAYER AND TIME OF COMMITMENT

Give kids a chance to believe in Jesus for the first time. Remind them that God loves them so much that He sent Jesus to
earth to pay for their sins. Lead them to pray as you pray. Pray that believers will submit their lives to the Holy Spirit, follow
Jesus, and tell others about Him.

““God sent Jesus to rescue us. Even though Jesus never disobeyed God, people put Jesus on the cross and
then buried Him. Jesus did not stay dead though. On the third day, God made Him alive again. A man named
Paul had good news for people who love Jesus. Paul said, “I taught what is most important. Jesus die d on the
cross to rescue us like the Scriptures said. Jesus was buried and He came back to life on the third day like the
Scriptures said. Jesus appeared to Peter and then to the other friends. Then He appeared to a big crowd of
people at one time. Then He appeared to me. Jesus is alive, and people who believe in Him will live with Him
forever!”

Learn the Big Picture Question

What You Say: Our Big Picture Question asks, Who is in control of everything? God is in control of
everything in heaven and on earth. Because Jesus never sinned. He could die on the cross to take the
punishment we deserve for our sin. When we trust in Jesus, God forgives us for our sin. Jesus became
human to rescue sinners.

Practice the Memory Verse:

Open your Bible to 1 Peter 5:10, Read the memory verse aloud several times.
What You Say: “Our memory verse helps us remember our Big Picture Question. Who is in control of
everything? God is in control of everything in heaven and on earth. He will restore us. Jesus is going to
be how He will restore us. Let’s pray together and move to small groups.”

Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (25 minutes)
