AC2401: ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Course Description

Academic Unit: 4.0


Pre-requisite: AB1401

Course Objectives

The purpose of this course is to help students develop a strong conceptual foundation in
enterprise information systems, a necessary pre-requisite for effective performance in
business professionals in the current digital era. The course enables students to understand,
evaluate and use enterprise information systems effectively in their future roles as business
managers, professionals, and consultants.

The course seeks to:


1) Provide an in-depth understanding of key business processes of an organization, and
how the data captured during the business process flow through to management and
financial accounting.
2) Train students to model key business process activities and identify risk and control
issues related to a business process
3) Provide comprehensive knowledge about enterprise information systems and explain
how they are implemented.
4) Provide students with an overview of some key modules of enterprise information
systems and teach students the skills of using an industry standard package such as
SAP.

Students will study how enterprise information systems are deployed in common business
transactions. They will learn about the information flow in fundamental accounting processes
and the major risks and controls associated with these processes. Students will be taught on
how data is captured, processed, stored and accessed for generating management
information and business reports and documents.

Students will gain hands-on training on enterprise information systems via lab sessions on
SAP – an industry standard package. With an understanding of the systems development
process and knowledge of enterprise information systems deployment in accounting and
business processes from pre-lab sessions, students will gain an appreciation of the underlying
workings of a typical enterprise information systems. This learning and experience will equip
them with knowledge for more effective sourcing, selection, implementation and deployment
of enterprise packages in practice. In addition, students will also learn how they can extract
relevant information from enterprise information systems, and perform the necessary data
analysis for better decision making. Students will also be exposed to the use of data analysis
tools.

Instruction Method

The course will be delivered as a series of seminars to groups of students as follows:


- 13 sessions, including a number of lab sessions
- 4 hours per session
- Course starts in week 1 with Seminar 1, and ends with Seminar 13 in week 14,
unless otherwise instructed by individual instructors.

1 Introduction and Business Processes R&S 1 & 2
This section provides an introduction and overview of the course, and
teaches students about organizational functions, business processes
and how their information needs are supported by enterprise
information systems.

Enhancing Business Processes through IT


This section introduces students to current IT developments and how IT
can be applied to automate, improve, and redesign business
processes. Students should be able to appreciate:
- The key principles behind process automation, improvement,
redesign, and management
- The need to challenge assumptions underlying business
processes
- The benefits and challenges of ERP-driven redesign
- The need for change management to support redesigned
processes.

2 Modeling Business Processes: Flowcharts


This section introduces students to key concepts in modeling cross-
functional transaction flows in business processes using system
flowchart.

3 Controls in IT-enabled Business Processes R&S 7
This session provides students with an understanding of the key
controls behind IT-enabled business processes. Students should be
able to:
- Describe the major risks that need to be guarded against in the
IT-enabled business processes, in particular with a focus on
revenue and expenditure cycles.

4 ERP and SAP Navigation (SAP Lab 1


This session introduces students to the navigation of the SAP system – SAP
and provides an overall understanding of ERP – its key components Navigation)
and characteristics.

5 Financial Accounting and Business Reporting using ERP Systems SAP Lab
This session provides students with an understanding of (FI,
reporting)
- How ERP systems can help address the problems of an un-
integrated accounting and financial reporting system.
- Describe the organizational levels and master data critical for Magal_2
the FI module in SAP. Chap 3
- How ERP systems are used to support financial reporting
through built-in reports and query within SAP.

6 Fulfillment Process (1) – Sales Order and Delivery SAP Lab


This seminar provides students with an understanding of how SAP can (SD)
be used to support the revenue cycle of an enterprise. Students should
be able to answer the following questions: R&S 12
- List the organizational levels that are critical for the revenue Magal_1
cycle. Chap 1 & 2
- List the master data that are critical for the revenue cycle.
- Understand in greater detail how SAP supports different
transactions in the revenue cycle.

7 Fulfillment Process (2) – Billing & AR Management SAP Lab


This session provides students with an understanding of how an (AR)
accounting and financial reporting system is integrated with the revenue
cycle, specifically through AR management. Students should be able to R&S 12
- Understand the key functionalities under AR management Magal_2
- Describe the integration between the revenue and FI modules, Chap 5
and appreciate the benefits of such integration.

8 Procurement Process SAP Lab
This seminar provides students with an understanding of how SAP can (MM)
be used to support the expenditure cycle of an enterprise. Students
should be able to answer the following questions:

- List the master data that are critical for the expenditure cycle.
- Understand in greater detail how SAP supports different
transactions in the expenditure cycle.

9 Managerial Accounting using ERP Systems SAP Lab


This session provides students with an understanding of how ERP (CO)
systems are used to support managerial accounting. Students should
be able to: Magal_2
- Describe the differences between financial and managerial Chap 3
accounting.
- Describe the key managerial accounting tasks supported by
ERP Systems
- Describe the key organizational levels and master data in SAP’s
Controlling Module
- Distinguish between primary and secondary cost elements
- Explain how activity based costing takes place in SAP
o Through periodic allocations – distributions and
assessments
o Through direct allocation.

10 Business Analytics and Visualization (I) (e-learning)


This seminar provides students with hands-on practice using Tableau,
a business analytics and visualization tools.
11 Business Analytics and Visualization (II)
This seminar introduces students to key concepts in data analytics and
how it can be applied in business. Students will learn to use a
predictive analytics tool to analyze business data and apply
visualization to the results.

12 Course Review
This seminar provides students with a review of the entire course, and
past year exam papers.

13 Project Presentations

Course Work: Group Project

Course work consists of a group project covering the whole course. The project, to be done
in groups of 4-5 students, will be worth 30%. Groups will be assigned by the instructors.
