TUTORIAL SHEET (Unit covered-5)
SUBJECT- ANALOG AND DIGITAL COMMUNICATION
SUBJECT CODE- EEC-609

Q.1 Define information and entropy. Find an expression for the channel capacity of a continuous channel.

Q.2.State and prove source coding theorem. Consider the code as listed below:

Symbol Code

A 00

B 01

C 10

D 110

E 111

The occurrence of symbols in the codeword is equiprobable. Find whether the code is possible or not? Find the
efficiency of code and check whether the code is uniquely decodable or not?

Q.3. A DMS emits six messages with probabilities 0.3, 0.25, 0.15, 0.12, 0.1 and 0.02. Find Quaternary Huffman code.
Determine its average word length, efficiency and redundancy.
HINT: Redundancy=1-efficiency

Q.4. 24 telephone Channel, each band limited to 3.4khz are TDM using PCM. Calculate BW of PCM for 128
quantization levels and 8khz sampling frequency?

Q.5. What do you mean by Multiplexing? Why it is required? Explain the two basic forms of Multiplexing.

Q.6 . Define information and entropy. Find an expression for channel capacity of a continuous channel.

Q.7. With the aid of Shannon-Hartley theorem, explain why doubling the bandwidth of a channel, while keeping a
constant transmitting power, will not double the channel capacity?

Q.8. Draw and explain the block diagram of TDM system. Also list the basic problems in the design of a digital
multiplexer.

Q.9. Explain briefly:

(i) T1 carrier system
(ii) Shannon Fano coding
(iii) Huffman coding.
(iv) TDM digital hierarchy

Q.10. A voice grade channel of the telephone network has a bandwidth of 3.4 KHz:
(i) Calculate the information capacity of telephone channel for a SNR of 30dB.
(ii) Calculate the minimum SNR required to support information transmission through the telephone channel
at a rate of 9600b/s.
Q.11. Show that entropy is a measure of uncertainty. Give some examples in support of it.
Q.12. Explain with relevant diagram Shannon Fano coding schemes.

Q.13. Derive the channel capacity and mutual information for Binary Symmetric Channel (BSC).

Q.14. T1 carrier system uses 24 voice channels based on 8 bit PCM. Voice channels are sampled at 8 KHz.. A singe
bit is added at the end of each frame for synchronization. Determine duration of each bit and transmission
rate.

Q.15. Apply Huffman coding for a system having seven messages with probabilities 0.4, 0.2, 0.12, 0.08, 0.08, 0.08
and 0.04. Find coding efficiency.
Q.16. Describe matched filter. What do you understand by physical realizibility of matched filter? Write properties
of matched filter.
