MONITORING SYSTEM
Abstract:
Air and sound pollution are the most concerning and growing issues
these days. Air pollution may evolve from anthropogenic or natural sources. Air
pollutants like CO, CO2 ,SO2, NOx, and O3, Suspended particulate matter(SPM) have a
great effect on the people’s health. Most of the major cities in the developing countries
are suffering from it. Sound pollution arises due to the man-made unwanted noises from
automobiles, heavy vehicles like pickup trucks etc., and aircrafts. Sound pollution
causes various health problems to the people living in the vicinity of the sound. Thus,
developing a real time air and sound pollution monitoring system is critical.
Here, we propose an IOT based air and sound pollution monitoring
system which combines a small sized and minimum cost sensor to an arduino
microcontroller unit. System uses air sensors to sense presence of harmful
gases/compounds in the air and constantly transmit this data to microcontroller. Also
system keeps measuring sound level and reports it to the online server over IOT. The
sensors interact with microcontroller which processes this data and transmits it over
internet. This allows authorities to monitor air pollution in different areas and take
action against it. Also authorities can keep a watch on the noise pollution near schools,
hospitals and no honking areas, and if system detects air quality and noise issues it alerts
authorities so they can take measures to control the issue.
Conventional air automatic monitoring system has high precision, but
large bulk, high cost making it impossible for large-scale installation. In the past, these
detector systems were very big, expensive and non-portable. Based on the introduction
of Internet of Things (IOT) into the field of environmental protection, this system puts
forward a kind of real-time air and sound pollution monitoring system. By using IOT,
this system can reduce the hardware cost into 1/10 as before. The system can be laid out
in a large number in monitoring area to form monitoring sensor network.
The advantages of this system are its cost effectiveness and portability.
With its features like reliable stability and long life, these systems can be used in bulk
without compromising on the functionality and precision of the expensive detector
systems. This system is affordable and user friendly. Since, this is microcontroller based,
this also has lower power requirement. The proposed system can be used for outdoor
and indoor purposes thereby providing a vast number of use cases.
