Executive Summary

We live in the modern era where English is the most used language all over the world. Which is
why, learning English is one of the most important thing to do specially for the students. It is the
biggest challenge for the developing countries like Bangladesh.

In this report we have tried to concentrate on the problems of learning English in Bangladesh and
what are the solutions to these problems. The main problems of learning English are unfavorable
environment, Much Preference Given in Bangla to English, Limited Scopes to Practice English,
Lack of Quality Materials, Impractical Attempt, Lack of Motivation, and Overemphasis on
Grammatical Accuracy, Limited Scope for Consultation.
The teachers also have a big role to the learning process. We lack of Efficient Teachers, Lack of
Teachers’ Training, Lack of Teachers’ Motivation, Lack of Proper Material, Lack of Proper
Infrastructure, Contradiction between Teaching and Assessment, Problem in Proper Teaching
Method , Teaching as Dual Profession etc.

The solutions to these problems are that, first of all, we have to be very passionate about English.
The both teachers and students have to cooperate each other and learn together more. Focusing
on the grammar skills from the primary school properly. We should focus more on acquisition
than trying to learn artificially. We have to improve our vocabulary skills and listening skills.

Most importantly the natural solution to the problem of learning English is that, we have to focus
more on the English media instead of Indian or Bangla Media.

The practice of the English language should be given much emphasis in all spheres of life, then
we can certainly reach our goal. And only then good command in English will be ensured.

For preparing the report mainly secondary data have been taken. For the secondary data, the
information has been taken mostly from the internet.
At first, we have tried to detect what the problems are about learning English in our country. We
have browsed through different topics related to problems of learning English and solution to the
problems.

Also we have put some information that we thought can be the solutions to the problems of
learning English. At last, we have tried to summarize the problems and recommended the best
possible solutions.

English has become the most important international language. There are several problems of
learning English and that particularly in Bangladesh. We are going to detect these major
problems regarding English practice and also we are going to try to solve these problems.

English Language

English is a West Germanic language that was first spoken in early medieval England and is now
a global language. It is spoken as a first language by the majority populations of several
sovereign states, including the United Kingdom, the United
States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and a number of Caribbean nations; and it is
an official language of almost 60 sovereign states. It is the third-most-common native language
in the world, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. It is widely learned as a second language and
is an official language of the European Union, many Commonwealth countries and the United
Nations, as well as in many world organizations.

The reasons why we can not avoid second or foreign languages

Foreign language: A foreign language is a language not spoken by the indigenous people of a
certain place: for example, English is a foreign language in Japan. It is also a language not
spoken in the native country of the person referred to, i.e. an English speaker living in Japan can
say that Japanese is a foreign language to him or her.

Second Language: A second language is any language other than the first, or native, language
learned; it is typically used because of geographical or social reasons. The term is to be
distinguished from foreign language; linguist Eric Lundeberg uses second language in his critical
period hypothesis to mean a language consciously learned or used by its speaker after puberty. In
most cases, people never achieve the same level of fluency and comprehension in their second
languages as in their first language.

Mother tongue or first language is perhaps the most favorite thing for any person. The question
of language has resulted into many conflicts and discontentment. The prime example of such
discontentment is the Language Movement of 1952 in Bangladesh. On the other hand we can not
live in isolation. We have to be in contact with the speakers of other languages. Bangladesh is
considered to be a monolingual country in which more than 98% of the population is speakers of
Bangla language. However, there are more than ten languages in such a small country like
Bangladesh. Monipuri, Urdu, Chakma, Santali, Garo,Rakhain, Tipra- are just some of the other
languages present in Bangladesh.

Today, the world has become a global village. Thanks to the advancement of communication
system and technology. Every country is dependent on others for trade and commerce, education,
politics etc. As a result, we have to constantly communicate with other countries and speakers of

other languages. Third world countries like Bangladesh have to depend on foreign aid because
they are not self-sufficient. As a result, many foreigners come to Bangladesh. A third factor is
the factor of religion. The sacred language of the Muslims is Arabic, Sanskrit for Hindus, Pali for
the Buddhists and Latin for the Christians.

All these factors remind us the necessity for learning other language(s) in addition to our mother
tongue. According to this reality many countries of the world have adopted a European language
as second language which is often used in education, law court, economic activities and
government works. These languages have most of the time official status in the constitution of
those countries. Many of the cases the countries have adopted the language of their past colonial
rulers as the second language. Sometimes these languages are also called official language.

Condition of English in Bangladesh :

After Independence the government took the initiative to implement Bangla language in law
court. As a result, now the lower courts carry out their activities in Bangla but English is yet very
influential in High Court and Supreme Court. If a lawyer wants to practice in Supreme court then
he must have a good command over English language. Many of the judges still give their
verdicts in English language. It seems that this trend of using English will remain for the forcible
future.
English in Education sector in Bangladesh:
Formal and institutionalized education system started in Bangladesh during the British rule. At
that time Bangladesh was part of British India. There was a debate about the medium of
education. Raja Rammohan Roy argued that the medium should be English rather than Sanskrit
or Persian. During the British period the medium of education was largely in English. Calcutta
University took an initiative in 1935 to introduce Bangla as a medium of education along with
English. In Bangladesh the use of Bangla in college level started in the 1960s. Now students can
answer in the examinations in Bangla or English. In the college level and university level after
1971 the government tried to patronize Bangla and implement it by replacing English in the
education sector but this did not came into reality because of some basic problems. The first
problem is that there were not enough books of any field in Bangla language. This problem is
more acute in science and technology. For example, there are almost no books in Bangla about
computer technology that can be used as a reference book in the University level.

Actually there are three kinds of education systems in our country- Bangla medium, English
medium, and Madrasa system. Bangla medium schools can be divided into two sections-
government schools, and kindergarten schools. In the kindergarten schools more emphasis is
given on English language than government schools. Some of the famous kindergarten schools
of Dhaka are Vikarounnesa, Holycross, Willes Little Flower, and so on. Although these schools

belong to Bangla medium the students have to study 3-4 English books like: Radiant Way,
Active English, Desk Work, Fundamental English, Brighter Grammar, and so on. On the other
hand in the government schools there is mainly one English book (English for Today) which is
published by Bangladesh Text Book Board. The English medium schools do not follow
Bangladeshi education system and are under the supervision of British Council. The medium of
instruction in these schools is English and many of the students of English medium are even very
weak in Bangla language. There are two kinds of Madrassas - Dakhil and Kawmi. The Kawmi
Madrassas are not recognized by the government and do not receive any assistance from the
government. In this Madrassas emphasis is given on learning Arabic, Persian, and Urdu while
Bangla and English are neglected. On the other hand in Dakhil Madrassas emphasis is mainly
given on Arabic and Bangla and English are not so much neglected.

So we can clearly see that the difference in education system in Bangladesh is solely based on
the difference in the medium of education. Although Bangla is the National-Official language of
Bangladesh it is the English medium education institutes who get more money. The rise of
private universities has only increased the status and importance of English language in
Bangladesh. There are now more than 50 private Universities in Bangladesh and the medium of
education in all of them is English. These universities charge 2 lakh to 5 lakh taka for Bachelor
course. If the medium of education was in Bangla then hardly any student or parents would get
interested to pay such huge money for the education in private universities.

From the above discussion it is clear that in our general education system English has equal if
not more importance than Bangla. In our education system English is really the Second language
as all the students have to study it as a compulsory subject for twelve years.

English and Administration:


During the language movement the people of Bangladesh were afraid that if Urdu was
established as the State Language of Pakistan then all the government activities will be carried
out in Urdu and our people will suffer. As a result of the language movement, the Pakistani
Regime kept on carrying out government activities in English language. After Bangladesh
became independent the government of Awami League decided to replace English with Bangla
in administrative works but after the death of Sheikh Mujib this process came to a halt and
English continued to remain as the dominant language. It was during the rule of Ershad Bangla
Procholon Aeen of 1987 was created and implemented. From that time English started to lose its
significance in administration. However, it has to be mentioned that all the international
communication of Bangladesh government is carried out through English.

English in Economic activities:

The economy of Bangladesh is dependent on foreign aids and export of some common items like
readymade garments, jute, tea, fish etc and also we import a lot of things. Bangladesh is not self
sufficient economically. Trading is more popular than production. Trading requires constant
communication with foreign companies. Many of the companies who are involved in trading
have to use English in dealing with foreigners.Suppose; a company is doing trading with China
which is not an English speaking country. Then the company has to contact the Chinese
company in English. If we look at the advertisements of the private sector jobs then we can
easily notice that most of the job advertisements are posted in English. Even most of the private
sector job advertisements that are posted in Bengali newspapers are posted in English. Almost all
the private jobs state that the applicants must have good proficiency in English language. Almost
all the public limited companies publish their annual reports in English. Some of these
companies produce a Bangla version of their annual report but the emphasis is always on
English. So it is clear that English is the dominant language in our economic activities.

Why Learn English: Reasons to Learn English

There are many reasons to learn English, but because it is one of the most difficult languages to
learn it is important to focus on exactly why it is you want to learn English. Here we will look at
ten great reasons why English is so important. Post this list somewhere you can see it and it will
motivate us to keep going even when we are tired of trying to figure out which witch is which!

1. English is the most commonly used language among foreign language speakers.
Throughout the world, when people with different languages come together they
commonly use English to communicate.
2. Why learn English when it is so difficult? Well, knowing English will make you bilingual
and more employable in every country in the world.
3. Despite China, the United States is still a leader in technical innovation and economic
development. English is used in the United States and in each of these fields.
4. English is commonly spoken throughout much of the world due to Great Britain’s
expansion during the colonial age. People in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, parts of
Africa, India, and many smaller island nations speak English. English is the commonly
adopted second language in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands.
Speaking English opens these countries and cultures up to you.
5. Another reason why English is so important is that it is the language of science. To excel
in science you need to know English.
6. English is based on an alphabet  and, compared to Chinese, it can be learned fairly
quickly.
7. English is also the language of the Film Industry and English means you no longer have
to rely on subtitles.
8. In the United States, speaking English immediately opens up opportunities regardless of
your ethnicity, color, or background.

9. Learn English and you can then teach your children English -- or if they are already
learning, you can now communicate with them in English.
10. English speakers in the United States earn more money than non-English speakers.
Learning English will open your job prospects and increase your standard of living.

Importance of learning English in Bangladesh

Our parents are confused with where to send their children - an English medium school or a
Bangla medium school. English, for its global image and demand, and Bangla, for its national
and first language, are the staple mediums of instruction in educational institutions in
Bangladesh. This article highlights the importance of English both in Bangla and English
medium schools. It is commonly seen that the majority of students attend Bangla medium
schools offered by the government and private sectors. In Bangla medium all subjects are
composed in Bangla except the subject English. Bangla medium schools are administered by the
government and they organise board examinations - Primary School Certificate (PSC),
Junior School Certificate(JSC), Secondary School Certificate (SSC), and Higher Secondary
Certificate(HSC)-nationally.

On the other hand, a small number of students attend private English medium schools. In English
medium all subjects are composed of English except Bangla. English medium schools follow the
international curriculum and the examinations of Ordinary Level (O Level) equivalent to SSC,
and Advanced Level (A Level) equivalent to HSC are held and marked internationally.

Both English and Bangla medium Schools are producing educated population in Bangladesh. But
many guardians and educators think that English medium schools provide congenial atmosphere
in the school areas and their trained and well-paid teachers have excellent interpersonal and
instructional skills alongside the knowledge of their subjects concerned whereas Bangla medium
schools are struggling with an unrealistic teacher-student ratio (around 1:50) which obliges them
to be very strict and teachers with limited facilities can't help behaving rudely with their students
which create many problems in the learning process.

Moreover, teachers of English medium schools try their heart and soul to build their students'
concepts clear about a topic so that students never forget it. They don't even prefer
memorization. For slow learners they have after-school programmes. However, teachers of
Bangla medium schools don't have much opportunity to provide their best practice in teaching as
they have to deal with large classes so it is not always easy for them to check the understanding
of all students. They sometimes ask their students to memorize if their words are not understood.
Some teachers in Bangla medium, taking the chance of large class system, ask the students for
coaching for extra care. 

In English medium schools, the methods of instruction and interaction inside the class and school

area are usually English which facilitate the students to acquire English language faster with
proficiency and accuracy. Conversely, Bangla medium schools do not provide such opportunities
for their students, so naturally the students in this medium are struggling with English language
both in spoken and written versions. Their comprehension level in English is not usually that
high as well. 

It is however worth-mentioning that though English medium schools are doing good, they are
pretty expensive. Only elite class or upper middle class people can afford this. Besides, it has
been commonly noticed that English medium students are less concerned with their culture and
heritage. Usually they are fascinated with the western culture more often and do not bother to be
familiar with the history of their own country. In many cases, English medium products prefer to
live and settle in abroad permanently. 

Unlike English medium schools, Bangla medium schools are now-a-days paying attention to
English. The communicative system to teach English language in Bangla medium schools and
colleges has been beneficial. We have English version schools that have been administered by
the government and have newly emerged as alternative to English mediums. But we have
shortage of skilled teachers in these schools.

In this global age, we need our young generation to be capable of communicating well.
Linguistically or culturally, a student having good command on English will face less problems
studying abroad or living there.

As English has already taken the driving seat among all other languages, its impact on the socio-
economic development of countries is worth-noting. Since it acts as a medium for people of
different nations, English is used widely as a vehicle language for the transactions of
international trade. Besides, a good command in English is essential for those who want to
enhance their knowledge and maintain global communications.

When our educated population after their higher education competes in the job market inside or
outside the country, they will need to prove their proficiency in English. If they start learning
English seriously, their proficiency level in the language would be good and wherever they go
they will be able to uphold the image of Bangladesh.

The Problems of English Teaching

Lack of Efficient Teachers: There are two common sayings that ‘Education is the backbone of
a nation’ and ‘A teacher is an architect of a nation’. There is a deep connection between the two
ideas. In other words, a teacher constructs a nation with the help of his refined knowledge. So as
a builder of a nation, a teacher of English must be efficient. But there are many teachers of
English who are not proficient enough in English because the sorting out procedures of teacher

here are not good and sometimes the appointment of a teacher depends upon money not upon
merit.

Lack of Teachers’ Training: Lack of teachers’ training is one of the major problems found in
teaching English in Bangladesh. Actually, a well trained teacher can help a student learn better.
But there are teachers who receive no training at all to teach English. So as an untrained teacher,
he cannot help release the students’ problems and fear of the subject. Even he cannot make the
lessons interesting because of the lack of some effectual strategies. If he had received training, he
or she could have taught the subject comparatively good. If the situation keeps on going, it will
hamper the students’ dormant potentialities and it will kill the valuable time the learners too.
Lack of Teachers’ Motivation: Except few, in most cases teachers are seen to be insincere. He
like a businessman thinks of money only and he feels it unnecessary to motivate his students. We
know that only bookish knowledge cannot lead a student to be a fully successful citizen of a
nation. So during a class, a teacher has to motivate the students and such motivation will help the
students to go ahead and also assist him to reach the intended goal. Even he does not encourage
the students to practice speaking inside and outside the class. There is a saying that where there
is a will, there is a way. In the same way, where there is motivation there is success.

Lack of Proper Material: In our country textbooks at the rate of one title per class are
produced centrally by NCTB (National Curriculum and Textbook Board), which all the
mainstream schools have to use. All these books use the communicative approach to some
extant. And every book includes literary texts which are integrated with the main topic of the
unit. The teachers depend on the textbook contents and methodology for what they call teaching
English. McRae says that the teacher who follows nay course-book slavishly will inevitably bore
him of himself as well as the students. And the excuse of getting though the book by the end of
the course is one of the most counterproductive and openly anti-learning attitudes and
encourages rote-learning at the expense of communicative use of the language.

Lack of Proper Infrastructure: The systems of teaching English in Bangladesh are not very
acceptable. It also affects teaching of English beyond imagination.

Contradiction between Teaching and Assessment: There arises a contradiction between


teaching and assessment. Here a teacher is not well assessed, for this reason, there is no
improvement seen in the quality of a teacher rather he becomes very insincere and indifferent to

the class and the students. This causes harms to learners. And soon the learners lose their interest
in the class. 

Problem in Proper Teaching Method: Traditional teaching methodology followed by teachers


in Bangladesh is not suitable for teaching communicative English, but only for meeting the
requirements of the present examination system. That is why, even if a teacher knows how to
make his or her learners practice oral skills, he or she does not find it worth practising. So, there
is an urgent need to change the way of teaching foreign language to bring it more into line with
the learner-centered, collaborative approach of the communicative method.   

Teaching as Dual Profession: In Bangladesh a teacher is one of the lowest paid service
providers to the nation. So the salary they are provided with is not enough for them to lead a
simple life when the price hike of the essentials is soaring high almost every day. This is why,
they finding no other way alternative engage themselves in other ways of earning such as
teaching one batch after another and other types of business side by side. This puts a negative
impact on them. Because of it, a teacher soon loses his energy to impart education in the class.
To be honest, here money is the major fact to them for survival not the quality of education.   

The Problems of Learning English in Bangladesh

Unfavourable Environment: Here in Bangladesh the environment of learning English is to


some extent unfavorable because it is often seen that a person interested in learning English is
normally laughed and criticized severely and ignorantly by the people around the learners
because of the mistakes he or she commits while learning which involves conscious endeavour.
Such ruthless criticism prevents a learner of English from exercising in it and it ultimately results
in failure.   

Much Preference Given in Bangla to English: Here Bangla is much preferred to English in


every sphere of life. The learners influenced by the family members and the history of
Bangladesh often feel that to try to learn English is similar to paying disrespect to the martyrs
died in ‘The Language Movement’ in 1952. Therefore, they generally avoid it. To be true, the
learners love conversing with other people in Bangla. Even they love to read Bangla. It is seen
that some students weak in English peruse guides written in Bangla while the texts selected for
him or her are completely in English. But they hardly try to understand that it is just the wasting
of time, nothing else.      

Limited Scopes to Practice English: Bangladeshi learners face a great deal of problems on their
way to learn English. We know that a classroom is nowadays only the place where learners have
suitable environment to practice English. But they get hardly any opportunity to practice it. Here
the teachers would encourage them to communicate in English. But this is not enough for them.
In order to learn English well, they need practicing English outside the classroom. But the
scenario is completely opposite here because as soon as the learners come out of the educational
institutions, they never find any interest in speaking English.

Lack of Quality Materials: Qualitative English learning materials are not available here. To
attain good knowledge of English, a learner needs to be supplied with quality materials which

can help them to make a good start because we know that a good start is half-done. They are
willing to purchase cheap books composed by some cheap writers and those copies are replete
with many a mistake and wrong ideas. In addition, the teachers who are directly involved in
preparing book lists for the students are found to be less careful because in most cases the
teachers are excessively influenced by a group of foul book businessmen. Therefore, the students
are deprived of good books and guidelines.        

Impractical Attempt: In this respect, we can remember a passage title “How to Ride a Bicycle”.
Here there were two friends who tried to learn how to ride a bicycle. Here one is called Raghib
and another is called Adeb. Adeb wanted to learn to ride a bicycle by only reading a book while
Raghib took a bicycle in practical and started practising riding the bicycle. At first Raghib fell
off several times and Abed laughed at him. After several unsuccessful trials, Raghib was
performing fairly well, in the meantime, Abed completed only three chapters of his book and
leaned about how a cycle works. However, learning English is like riding a bicycle. It is
unfortunate that almost all the learners of English here in Bangladesh are like Adeb. They
believe that a book is the best guide to them. The learners are in no way practical at all. Any
language can be acquired successfully by being practical in the same way Raghib learned to ride
a bicycle. So, only studying grammar books will not help a learner to acquire a language
effectively.               

Lack of Motivation: There are some teachers who neither teach the learners properly nor
encourage them to acquire a language. So lack of motivation creates a cloud of frustration in
them. Gradually, they finding English a hard discipline try to discover some shortcut ways to
only pass English in public examinations because they find hardly any interest in it. And it is
really true that if you find no interest in a piece of work, it is very hard to improve in it.    

Overemphasis on Grammatical Accuracy: Grammar and Translation Method is one of oldest


methods that are still applied in teaching English system and it demands overemphasis on
grammatical accuracy in leaning and it creates unspeakable fright in the learners. As they have
no option open for them to avoid the discipline, few of them follow dishonest ways only to pass
in English. We often forget that a language comes first and then grammar follows language.

Limited Scope for Consultation: All the learners are not alike. Both weak and brilliant learners
co-exist in a leaning environment. Brilliant students understand a lesson better and faster than the
weaker students in the same class. Sometimes it happens that some of the students face many a
problem to understand the particular topic discussed in the class. Some of them often feel the
necessity of consulting their problems with the teachers but there is hardly any scope in school
and college level education for it. If they were able to consult the problems with their teachers,
they would be benefited from it.

Too much attention on the Indian media(Specially Hindi Serials) instead of English media

This has been a huge problem specially for the young generation, the girls in particular. It is
blocking the interest of the young people on the English media. One way to learn English is to
just always stay in touch with English. What we young people, specially the girls are doing is
that we are focusing more on the Hindi media or the hindi movies and serials. We have so less to
learn from the Indian media. The government must also step forward to change this scenario.
When the Indian government is not interested to allow our Bangla channels to be aired in India,
why is our government allowing Indian channels to be aired in Bangladesh? It is not fair. If they
impose some restrictions on these channels, maybe then our local channels would also be more
benefited. More people would be interested to watch local programs, which are often a hundred
times better than the programs that are aired on the Indian channels. Moreover, Bangladeshi
people have to be conscious as well. They should be aware of their own rights and values. They
should not allow such discrimination to take place. They must not be influenced or guided by
some other culture. Government should increase tax on hindi channels which air hindi serials
continuously such as STAR PLUS, ZEE TV, SONY, SAHARA CHANNEL etc.

Solution to the English learning problems :

Developing a passion for learning English:

All English learners would like to speak English well. They are excited at the idea of being able
to communicate in English fluently. However, they usually don’t care about the learning process
itself. For most learners, learning English is a duty — something that they have to, but don’t
want to do. They don’t see pleasure in learning English.

In short, most learners would like to speak English well but don’t like to be learning English.
This is the first and biggest problem facing an English learner, because a person who doesn’t like
to learn English will not learn it well. If you don’t love English, English won’t love you back!

If we want to become a successful learner, you need to like the learning process itself. You need
to treat time spent on English as time for pleasure and relaxation. For example, you need to
enjoy:

(1) Reading English sentences and thinking about their structure


(2) learning new words from a dictionary
(3) Writing a correct English sentence by consulting dictionaries, grammar guides, and the
Web
(4) practicing the pronunciation of English sounds and words

Ideally, learning English should be our hobby. We should think of ourselves as English Learner
— a person who has chosen learning English as one of their favorite activities.

Making the first change to one’s life:

The decision to learn English requires changes in your life. For example, deciding that one will
read a book in English for 30 minutes every day and keeping to that decision. It’s very difficult
to make a small, but permanent change to your life, especially if learning English doesn’t seem
“fun”. However, learners should remember that studying English for 15 minutes every day gives
you much better results than studying for a whole day once a month.

While the first change is the most difficult, each subsequent one is hard, too. A lot of learners
take the first step (e.g. they start reading a book in English every day) and stop there. They do
not engage in other English-building activities.

A good learner will have a set of activities (reading, watching TV, practicing pronunciation,
listening to recordings, etc.) and choose from that set according to his or her mood. One activity
is not good enough, because (1) you get bored more quickly, and (2) it gives you a range of
language skills that is typically too narrow. For example, reading in English can’t improve your
pronunciation, although it can improve your grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and
writing skills.)

Improve our grammar skills

Speak in English

Assuming English is the language whose grammar we wish to improve upon. English is


understood in most parts of the planet, and its importance is increasing in our daily lives.
Learning grammar can be hard if we don't really know how to speak English. Improve our
grammar by continuous practice. Our speech will reflect patterns we hear, and the rest will fall
into place. Find a friend who can speak to we in English, and move on. Whenever we feel stuck,
always remember to ask for help.

Make a plan

Try to get an overview of English grammar from a text book or online resource. Note the
grammar points you need to work on and plan to work on each for at least a few days.

Find a tutor

Some of us may disagree with the idea of going to a teacher for grammar lessons, but why not? If
you are looking for an alternative, practice grammar using online exercises. There are a number
of sites that offer exercises on a range of topics. While using a computer to type a document,
grammar checkers can be very helpful too.

Identify common mistakes

People who speak the same language often make the same mistakes in English grammar. For
example, many Russian speakers have trouble using "a" and "the" in English. Find out what
grammar points are often difficult for speakers of your native language. Pay extra attention to

translate, you have to work with whatever is on the page, even if the grammar is difficult. Start
translating simple things like advertisements and then move to newspapers and magazine
articles. Translating dialog in plays is another good way to practice.

Read and practice

The more you read, the better you get with your vocabulary. It improves grammar too. If
possible, read aloud. Functional grammar deals with the way in which words and word order are
used in social perspectives to get the message across. However, if you have a sudden dislike
towards heavy grammar books, try the 'parrot method.' This refers to listening and repeating
things as many times as possible, so it becomes natural for you to say it that way.

Reading aloud is simpler

Why? Because you eventually are listening to correct grammar as you read it; watching
television also helps. It works better if we watch what we are really interested in, although the
BBC is always a great option. The English spoken in America is different from that spoken in
England. Some parts of spelling and grammar vary between the two countries as well.

If you know any native English speakers, ask if they could check some of your writing now and
then. If there are no native English speakers near you, look online for language-learning forums
or language-exchange sites. Just remember if the native speaker is not a teacher, he or she may
not be able to explain grammar rules.

Don’t agonize about every mistake; learning good grammar habits takes time.

Always be aware of your weaknesses in grammar. You cannot improve unless you know where
the problem lies.

Overall, you should invest in reading, grammar, writing, speaking, and listening materials.
Moreover; practice, practice and practice! This is the most effective way to improve one's
grammar skills.

If you use the Internet often, then also try to incorporate that into improving your writing and
grammar skills; for example, sending e-mails. Therefore, incorporate grammar into your life in a
practical way and your everyday language.

Always have a dictionary and thesaurus handy while reading.

If you know someone with excellent grammar skills, ask him or her for help. He or she may be
willing to grade you periodically by reviewing a Word document or e-mail you have written.

Focus a good portion of your time on writing complete sentences and proper paragraphs. In
addition, you can build on that by writing a page, short stories and, of course, have your
grammar checked as you go through the various stages.

Acquisition versus Learning

There are different opinions on the acquisition and learning of language. Krashen’s opinion is
one of them. He distinguishes acquisition from learning. Acquisition refers to the subconscious
process of picking up a language through exposure, and learning refers to the conscious process
of studying it. According to this view, if a language is internalized subconsciously through
exposure in a natural environment, the process becomes acquisition. In contrast, if a language is
internalized consciously through instruction in classroom settings, the process becomes learning.
When a language is internalized subconsciously by a learner, he/she may not have grammatical
competence, but he/she may have communicative competence in a particular context; and when a
language is internalized consciously by him/her, he/she may have grammatical competence, but
may not have communicative competence. First language acquisition occurs when the learner is
usually a child without a language so far, and acquires one anew. Second language acquisition
stands in contrast to first language acquisition. It is learnt as an additional language after he/she

has acquired his/her mother tongue. Second language acquisition refers to all the aspects of the
language that the language learner needs to master. Second language acquisition sometimes
contrasts with the second language learning on the assumption that they are different processes in
acquiring a language. The term "acquisition" is used to refer to picking up a language through
exposure, whereas the term "learning" is used to the process of acquiring a language other than
mother tongue in a structured means or tutored setting. It covers the development of phonology,
lexical, grammar and pragmatic knowledge.

The easiest way to learn English is to be with English and following English related things all the
time. We can always try to watch English Movies, Tv-series, Documentary, short films. We can
also try to read interesting English books. Just reading them will strengthen our English skills a
lot in a way that we will find new words, we will get to know how a writes tend to write English
because they use very nice structure of English.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we have mentioned so many problems of learning English, also the solutions to
these problems. The students or English language learners have to be very determined to learn
English. As mentioned, teachers are also a very important role to this. Only their cooperation and
encouragement can bring some light to the weak students or learners.

To sum up the elaborate discussion above, it is apparent that the whole procedures applied here
in Bangladesh to teach and learn English should be geared up to the needs to the age and the
practice of the English language should be given much emphasis in all spheres of life, then we
can certainly reach our goal. And only then good command in English will be ensured.

First of all, to develop our English skills, we have to practice English all the time. At home, at
university, with friends. To do that, we have to totally forget about our mistakes.Which is why
we need to improve our grammar skills first. We have try to get ourselves attached to English
related society. For example, we students from Bangla medium can stick with English medium
students who have tendency to speak in English all the time. We have to create a total English
related environment only then we will be able to improve day by day naturally.

To provide the students with the maximum benefit in an atmosphere where English is a foreign
language, teacher should involve them in a variety of activities as pair work, role-play, question-
answer, discussions, projects and the rest given in the textbook and also prepared by themselves.
Students’ participation should be given priority over teacher participation as the basic skills of
language can best be practiced through learner-centered activities and so tasks should be
interesting and relevant to the learners’ life and environment.

In general the teachers’ attitude towards leaning English by the ‘read and translate’ method
should be changed and they need to be made aware that translating is a quite separate and
distinct skill from language learning.

The language for classroom management, such as instructions given, questions asked by the
teachers and students and answers given, should be English. Using English for these purposes
will increase the amount of the practice in spoken skills. This will give the students an
impression that English, like the mother tongue, can be used for real life communication. The
immersion in English might initially pose some problems of understanding but if the technique
of all-English presentation and practice is continued, the learners will quite soon develop their
comprehension capacity.

 As regards error correction, the teacher should create an environment in which mistakes are
accepted as part of the learning process. George opines that the correction of every error provides
no guarantee that students will learn from their mistakes. And Burt suggests that to limit
rectification will help the learners escalate the motivation and the confidence levels. It is possible
that through practice students will develop their speaking skill. The students should be motivated
to speak first and they can be advised not to always ponder over the grammatical corrections.
Once they develop the habit of speaking by removing the shyness and fear, it is likely that they
will be willing enough to concentration on correction as far as possible.

Learners’ autonomy being the key, the learner will develop a sense of responsibility towards
learning and achievement rather than being spoon-fed by the teacher. This will enhance their
sense of self-achievement, confidence and autonomy. The practical argument for promoting
learners’ autonomy is that in the long run a teacher may not always be available to assist.
Learners need to be able to learn on their own because they do not have access to the kind or
amount of individual instruction they need in order to become proficient in the language. Finally

learners become more efficient in their language learning if they do not have to spend time
waiting for the teacher to prove them with resources or solve their problems.

            Regarding test and evaluation, the test questions should be framed in a way that the
students are not encouraged to commit ready-made answers to memory as happens now. Instead
they would be compelled to think individually and independently in order to answer them. Oral
examinations of this kind are free from the dangers of the candidate offering a prepared speech.
If classroom procedures have familiarized students with the interactive possibilities of group
discussion regarding representational materials, there need be no undue examination
nervousness. Again, the teaching should be closely related to both what will be tested and how it
will be tested.  

Apart from attaining a degree, the students should be encouraged to talk whenever it is possible.
They will be given contexts and materials that will allow them to develop the habits of thinking
and expressing themselves in English. A main strand of the material my usefully be literature-
based. At present the ability to speak in English is in very great demand, it would be a pity to
restrict the opportunities to the economically advantaged urban few. Moreover, the fast that,
Open University expenses are comparatively affordable could be beneficial, have a positive
impact on learning, and ensure equal educational opportunities for all.

In our report we have mainly focused on the problems we face when we want to learn English.
We have done this report very normally. We only took the help of the internet and our own
experience to solve these problems of learning English. We have basically done these works
