How to Nail Nervousness
1. In mind, ‘stage fright’ – a natural state of
mind
2. Mental & physical preparation:
– Mental (think positively)
– Physical (get the body ready by relaxation and
exercise)
3. Positive mental attitude
4. Prepare your speech carefully
5. Use notes or preparation outline
6. Use visual aids where appropriate
7. Eye contact
8. Don’t expect to be perfect – if you do that
you will get nervous
Prepare a Speech
 Think of your audience – is the most
important element
 Focus on your purpose – every speech

has purpose
 Main body, introduction,conclusion

 Preparations outline & notes

 Don’t panic and have a fun


1. Your Audience
 Understanding your audience. Who are they?
– Age
– Sex
– Culture/race (look around at the audience & identify
them)
– Nationality
– Profession
– Education
– Religion
– Salary level
– Knowledge (never assume your audience know
everything)

 Ask yourself:
– How much do the audience know?
– What do they expect from your speech?
– Will the audience understand me?
– Will the place I am speaking in, affect the
audience? Like is there any noise exist
that will affect the talk.
2. Purpose

 Every speech have a general purpose:


– To entertain
– To inform
– To persuade
 Specific purpose
– To entertain/inform/persuade about a
specific
– Central idea (message)
– Using a number of points (usually three)
Body
 Contain all your main points
 Use a keyword or phrase to aid memory – like
chocolate, taste etc
 Turn each keyword into a statement – like
chocolate is cheap.
 Support each statement with examples or
illustrations – this is you have to do a
research;as an example Kit Kat cost about
RM1.50
 Make them interesting and memorable
 Don’t use too many points (usually 3 points)
 Allocate time equally
4. Organizing the Main
Body
 Use an appropriate organization pattern
for your points:
– Time sequence (for stories or ‘how to’)
– Space (describing places & people)
– Cause & effect (for showing how one thing
causes another thing to happen)
– Problem solution
– Topic (talking about complex idea)
5. The Introduction
 Should be brief, memorable & creative:
– Like joke, stories
– Avoid use old fashion talk style
 Should grab the audience attention right
away.
 The functions:
– Grab the audience attention
– Make your statement, quote or state your
purpose
6. Conclusion

 Three main function of conclusions:


– Bring a speech to a satisfying end
– Letting the audience know that you are
about to finish.
– Reinforcing the central idea or message
 Conclusion should include:
– Review of speech
– Restatement of message
– Call for actions or last word (may be a
quote)

– Volume: vocal variety
– Pitch: pronunciation correct and clear

 Read your plan aloud to see if it works
