CAUSE AND EFECT

1-What do you see in the picture?

I see the legionella bacteria, AIDs Virus and the E-coli
2-Why do we get sick?
We get sick because microbes are responsible for disease. They are all around us, but so small you
can't see them! These tiny living things can only be seen under a microscope. Among them are
viruses that can cause the flu or the common cold. Other germs cause stomach aches, headaches...

3-How does sickness go from one person to another?

One way is through direct physical contact, like touching or kissing a person who has the
infection. Another way is when an infectious microbe travels through the air
after someone nearby sneezes or coughs.

4-What does mean the word germ?

Germ is a microorganism, especially when disease-producing; microbe. A bud, offshoot, or
seed. The rudiment of a living organism; an embryo in its early stages. The initial stage in
development or evolution, as a germ cell or ancestral form.
5-What do you understand by immune system?
I understand that the immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that
defends the body against infection. The immune system keeps a record of every germ
(microbe) it has ever defeated so it can recognize and destroy the microbe quickly if it
enters the body again.

6-Explain cause and effect and give 3 examples each.

Cause and effect is a relationship between events or things, where one is the result of the
other or others. This is a combination of action and reaction.
1- Smoking cigarettes : Lung cancer, heart disease, stroke
2- Sedentary lifestyle: Increased Chances of Dementia, Depression, and Anxiety.
3- Not brush teeth:plaque build up, tartar build up, and bad breath.

7- Say the difference between viruses and bacteria, give 2 examples each.
Viruses, like the common cold or influenza are not alive and must invade living cells to grow.
The body’s own immune system must fight off the virus or let it run its course. Viral
infections are usually accompanied by multiple symptoms such as a sore throat, runny nose,
congestion, vomiting and diarrhea.
Examples: Ebola and Hanta fever.

Bacteria are living organisms and can be found everywhere. There are times when the
body’s immune system may not be able to fight off a bacterial infection. Antibiotics work to
kill the bacteria by stopping its growth. Bacterial infections often go together with pain,
aches, or sore areas of the body.
Examples: Bacillus, Spirillum.

8 -Which one of these can make you sick?

*shaking hands with someone
*being outside in cold weather
*eating food
*riding a crowded bus
*touching your eyes
*playing a computer game
