Mid Term Exam Q Paper

The document provides instructions for a take-home midterm exam involving modeling and analyzing a spring-mass-damper system. Students are given 24 hours to complete a single problem on paper involving: deriving the system's governing equation; transforming it to the frequency domain; finding the transfer function; evaluating responses to a given input force; and plotting the input and responses over time. The problem requires using the student's personal details for system parameters and initial conditions.

Instructions for Mid Term Exam (Take Home Type):

Read these instructions carefully for "Take home, open book part of the midterm exam (One extensive problem
relating to system modeling)"
Exam start time (paper will be shared on google classroom): 9:00 am Monday, Submission time: 9:00 am
Tuesday (i.e 24 hours total).
Paper MUST be solved on paper (Microsoft Word typed documents are NOT allowed)
Paper should preferably be submitted in Acrobat 'PDF' format (Scan pictures of your 'Neat Work' preferably
with the help of a mobile app or ‘Cam Scanner’ app and compiled in one PDF file. Make sure that the
scanned PDF file is readable).
Solved paper is to be submitted using google classroom platform (Just like you submit an assignment in it).
Students are advised to submit their paper well before the submission deadline in order to avoid missing
deadline due to technical, network or electricity issues.
Solve the question parts systematically and in order.
Any unfair means will lead to UFM case. Use the correct information as provided previously (Date of birth
and Registration number in their rightful places).
Mid Term Exam (Take Home Type)

(Q) A spring-mass-damper system is given in the Figure 1.

1. What is your date of birth (DD/MM/YY format)?

2. What is your registration number (vvPWMECxxZZ)?

3. Use the following system configurations.

m=MM kg, c=DD kN/(m/s), k=MM+DD kN/m,
𝑥(0) = 𝒀𝒀 𝑚, 𝑥̇ (0) = 𝒁𝒁 𝑚/𝑠

(Where MM, DD, YY are student’s date of birth

month, day and Year respectively and ZZ are
the last two digits of student’s registration
number)

4. Derive the governing equation of the system in time

domain, relating system input f(t) with the system
output x(t)
Figure 1 Spring-Mass-Damper
5. Transform the governing equation of system from System
time domain to frequency domain

6. Find the transfer function of the system

7. Draw the block diagram of the system showing the input(s) and or initial conditions, transfer
function and response of the system.

8. Use forcing function f (t)= 10 Sin (0.5 π t)

a. Find expression for displacement ‘x(t)’ response of the system

b. Find expression for velocity ‘𝑥̇ (𝑡)’ response of the system
c. Find expression for acceleration ‘𝑥̈ (𝑡)’ response of the system

9. Evaluate input ‘f(t)’ and response ‘𝑥(𝑡)’, ‘𝑥̇ (𝑡)’ and ‘𝑥̈ (𝑡)’ of the system at value of time given
below and present result in the form of table.
Time, t = 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5 seconds

10. Separately plot for a time range of 0 to 5 second

a. The input force ‘f(t)’
b. The response ‘𝑥(𝑡)’ (displacement) of the system
c. The response ‘𝑥̇ (𝑡)’ (velocity) of the system
d. The response ‘𝑥̈ (𝑡)’ (acceleration) of the system
