MATHEMATICS GRADE-10

WORKSHEET NO. 3
Quarter 1, Week 1

Learning Competency: Arithmetic Sequence

Objective:
 Identify the arithmetic sequence.
 Solve the nth term of the arithmetic sequence.
Overview:
Arithmetic sequence is a sequence where every term after the first is obtained by
adding a constant called the common difference.

Example 1a: 1, 4, 7, 10,…is arithmetic sequence since has a common difference of 3.

Example 1b: 15, 11, 7, 3… is arithmetic sequence also with a common difference of -4.
The first n terms of an arithmetic sequence with a1 as first term and d as common
difference are a1, a1+d, a1+2d,…, a1 +(n-1)d. If a and d are known, it is easy to find any term in
an arithmetic sequence by using the rule
an = a1 + (n-1)d
Example 2a: What is the 10th term of the arithmetic sequence 5, 12, 19, 26,…?
Solution: Since a1 = 5 and d=7, then substitute the value of a1 and d in the formula
an = a1 + (n-1)d. So a10 = 5 + (10-1)7 = 68.
Example 2b: What is the 15th term of the arithmetic sequence 50, 47, 44, 41,…?
Solution: Since a1 = 50 and d =(-3), then substitute the value of a1 and d in the formula
an = a1 + (n-1)d. So a20 = 50 + (20-1)(-3) = -7.

1.) What is the 8th term of the arithmetic sequence 3,7,11,15, 19…
2.) What is the 12th term of the arithmetic sequence 21, 16, 11, 6,…
3.) What is the 25th term of the arithmetic sequence 2,4,6,8,10,…
4.) What is the 17th term of the arithmetic sequence -5, -1, 3, 7, 11,…
5.) What is the 11th term of the arithmetic sequence -3, -23, -43, -63,…

Exercise B
Direction: Find the missing terms in each arithmetic sequence.
1.) 3, 12, 21,____, ____, ____ 6.) 17, 14,_____, _____, 5
2.) 8, 3, -2, _____, _____ 7.) 4, _____,_____,19, 24,…
3.) 5, 12, ____, 26, _____ 8.) ____, _____, ____, 8, 12,16
4.) 2,_____, 20, 29, _____ 9.) -1, ____, ____, _____, 31, 39
5.) ____, 4, 10, 16, _____ 10.) 13, ____, ____, ____, -11, -17

Test Yourself
Direction: Use the nth of an arithmetic sequence an = a1 + (n -1)d to answer the followiing
questions.
1. The second term of an arithmetic sequence is 24 and the fifth term is 3. Find the first
term and the common difference.
2. Find the 9th term of the arithmetic sequence with a1 =10 and d = - 1/2.
3. How many terms are there in an arithmetic sequence with a common difference of 4
with first and last terms 3 and 59, respectively?
4. Which term of the arithmetic seqeuence is -18, given that a1 = 7 and a2 = 2?
5. Find the common difference of the arithmetic sequence with a4 =10 and a1 = 45.
