ABSTRACT

Technical writing skills is important to students, and honing their skills through

reading engagement is essential to come up with better technical works. This paper was

conducted by the researcher to determine the level of reading engagement and technical

writing skills of students. The researcher employed non-experimental-quantitative

descriptive design and a self-made survey questionnaire was used as the data collection

instrument. The instrument used in the study was validated by the research adviser and

validators from the faculty of St. John Paul II College of Davao. Average Weighted Score

(Mean) and Descriptive Rating was used to analyze the research result and Pearson-r

was used by the statistician to analyze the hypothesis. The findings of this study yielded

that the level of reading engagement of students is high. This means that the reading

engagement of the respondents is oftentimes manifested through behavioral, cognitive

and emotional engagements. Consequently, the level of technical writing skills of the

respondents is also high. This means that the technical writing skills of students is

oftentimes manifested through clarity, conciseness, accessible document design,

audience recognition and accuracy. In addition, there is significant relationship between

reading engagement and technical writing skills of students. The researcher

recommended that school administrators may introduce programs or activities that will

improve or enhance the reading engagement of the students by conducting reading skills

enhancement training and encouraging them to join it.
