FUNCTION AS REAL-LIFE REPRESENTATION

Learning Competency: Represents real-life situations using functions, including piecewise
function

What I Need to Do
Read and follow the directions carefully for each of the activity. Since, you are
equipped with the knowledge needed for this task, we’re ready to go. As you go through
with the activities, you will learn how to represent a real-life situation using a function.
This activity is designed to further develop your skills in representing real-life situation
using a function. Just take time and hoping you’ll have lots of fun doing the activities.

Gearing Up
This activity is a guided activity that will enable you to learn on how to represent a
real-life situation using a function. Read and study first the examples then answer the
problems no. 1 and 2 in Activity no. 1.

Example 1. Give a relation H that represents the cost of buying x pair of shoes. If one pair
of shoes costs P200.00. Is this relation a function or not a function?

Solution. Since each pair of shoes costs P200.00, then the cost relation is
H(x) = 200x

If your domain is the set { 1,2,3} then your range is the set { 200,400,600}

Mapping the domain and range of that relation gives us

1 200

2 400

3 300

DOMAIN RANGE

The mapping is clearly one-to-one correspondence ,hence the relation is a function.

Example 2. A user is charged 𝑃300 monthly for a particular mobile plan, which includes
100 free text messages. Messages in excess of 100 are charged P1 each. Represent the
monthly cost for text messaging using the relation 𝑡(𝑚), where m is the number of messages
sent in a month.

Solution. The cost of text messaging can be expressed by the relation.

𝑡(𝑚) = { 300 , 𝑖𝑓 0 < 𝑚 ≤ 100

300 + (𝑚-100), 𝑖𝑓 𝑚 > 100

This relation is a function because the mapping diagram gives one-to-one correspondence.

Important concept:

A relation is a set of ordered pairs (x,y)

If the mapping diagram of a relation is one-to-one and many-to-one then the relation
is a function.

Piecewise Functions. Some situations can only be described by more than one formula,
depending on the value of the independent variable.

Let the Students do the activity below.

Activity 1: Represent me in your mind

1. Give a function C that can represent the cost of buying x meals, if one meal costs
P40.
Write your Answer: __________________________________________

2. A taxi ride costs P40.00 for the first 500 meters, and each additional 300 meters (or a
fraction thereof) adds P3.50 to the fare. Use a piecewise function to represent the taxi
fare in terms of the distance d in meters

Write your Answer:__________________________________________

Getting Better
In your own, answer the problems below.
Represent the following real-life situations using a function.
1. In this difficult times of Covid-19 Pandemic, Mr. Padayogdog is
earning Php 200 per day to do a certain job. Express the total
salary S as a function of the number n of days that he works.

Write your answer: __________________________________________

2. The computer shop of Mr. Dizon charges 20 pesos per hour( or a

fraction of an hour) for the first two hours and an additional 10
pesos per hour for each succeeding hour. Represent your
computer rental fee using the function R(t) where t is the number
of hours you spent on the computer.

Write your Answer: ___________________________________________

Gaining Mastery
Now that you have sufficient knowledge and skills on how to represent
a real-life situation using function, your next Activity helps you appreciate the
usefulness of this concept in a real-life situations.
Look around in your community. Write a real-life situation that involves relation.
Represent it using a piece-wise function.

Write your Answer: ____________________________________________________________

Rubrics for Scoring
If it applicable, provide rubrics on how the learners or their outputs will be graded.

What I Need to Remember

How did you feel the activity? Is it interesting? In this activity you
learned how to represent a real-life situation using a function. Your learning in this
lesson helps you realized that application mathematics surrounds us.

Below are the important concepts that you need to remember.

1. Relation- is a set of ordered pair ( x,y)
2. Function- it is a relation where each element in the domain is related to
only one value in the range by some rule.
3.  piecewise-defined function (also called a piecewise function, a hybrid
function, or definition by cases) is a function defined by multiple sub-
functions.
