LET’S SEE WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW

Positive Attributes

This activity to help teenagers realize that affirmations are beneficial

in becoming determined to reach goals such as to become more lovable and
capable adolescents.

Positive affirmations can help teens develop a "stronger sense of who

they are." Write as many positive traits as you can about yourself, such as
“I listen to others when they talk, to let them know I care,” or
“I study regularly to learn and get the grades I want,” or
“I take care of my space and belongings at home”.

LET’S LEARN

Affirmations
Affirmations are repeated phrases that focus on what the individual
wants out of life. They are in first person, positive and usually very brief and
to the point. Examples of affirmations which may assist a teen struggling
with self-image or self-esteem issues could include "I am a good
son/daughter" or "I am a special and unique person." Repeating these
phrases over and over will imbed these beliefs in the subconscious of the
teen and help him/her create a reality in his/her own mind. When he/she
begins to act and look the part, it will also create a reality in the minds of
his/her peers.

The first step to making positive changes in your life is to overcome

your negative thoughts. The best way to change your thinking pattern is to

5
reprogram your mind and blast your brain with positive affirmations that
can lead you towards your desired results. While this process cannot bring
about instant change, it can actually accelerate your progress and take you
a fewer steps away from radical success. With the right choice of positive
affirmations, you can finally achieve your life goals and see results you may
have never thought possible.

Affirmations are a powerful way to improve your mindset on a daily

basis, and research has shown that they can increase our feelings of self-
worth.
In the 1920’s a French psychologist by the name of Emil Coue first
popularized these self – affirmations. At first they were used to help
alcoholics and drug users to surmount their destructive habits. Coue
believed that written positive affirmations can lead to a change in believes,
thereby producing positive outcomes. Positive self – statements, if frequently
written and stated, are believed to persuade individuals into thinking that
they are true and consequently enhance the persons’ self – worth.

LET’S TRY THIS AND SELF-CHECK

Slogan or Personal Declaration

1. Choose a quote, phrase or a sentence that strikes you.

2. Make a slogan or personal declaration on how you can be committed to
your self – development.
3. Explain your thoughts and feelings about it. Include specific ways in
which you will develop yourself further.

LET’S STUDY AND ANALYZE THESE

1. What are your struggles in thinking and making affirmations about

becoming more lovable and capable adolescent?
2. How will you describe your feelings when you were making the
affirmation?

6
3. Why is affirmations beneficial to an adolescent for them to become more
lovable and capable?

LET’S REMEMBER

Adolescents are usually sensitive and too conscious as they have

unstable self – concept and self – worth. They easily get hurt when criticized,
disapproved or reprimanded. Though when praised, complimented, or
commended, their self – esteem and self – regard normally improve. For the
same reason, making affirmations is helpful in forming or bringing back the
confidence of adolescents. Using affirmations can help them to confidently
work towards their goals, redirect their focus if needed, and live out
responsible behaviors.

Affirmations transcend mere recitation of statements. They are not

just plain uttering of words but approaches to come up with positive beliefs
and convictions focus on making things happen. Even the famous
Muhammad Ali proclaimed the significance of affirmations by saying, “It is
repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a
deep conviction, things begin to happen.”
