Our heart beat, our lungs oscillate, we hear because our ear drum vibrates…

Vibration even makes us snore!!

The light waves which permit us to see & sound waves through which we hear entail vibration

We cannot even say “Vibration” without vibration of larynges, vocal cord

We move by oscillating our legs

We limit out discussion to “MECHANICAL VIBRATION”… i.e. Vibration of Dynamic Systems

What is a Dynamic System???

Any System that contains Mass and Elasticity.

• Vibration is any motion that repeats itself after an

interval of time. i.e. swinging pendulum

• RESONANCE – RESONANCE – RESONANCE
• Conveyors, Hoppers, Compactors,
Pneumatic Drills, etc. Tacoma Narrows Bridge
• Washing Machine
• Similar problems in machine tools,
• Mechanical Shakers, Mixers, Sieves, vehicles, turbines, pumps, compressors,
Sorters, etc. buildings, aircraft & spacecraft systems
• Musical Instruments • Excessive vibration leads to loosening
• Clocks, Watches on parts, noise & eventual failure

• Medical Field – Massagers, etc. • Effects of vibration on human body:

Discomfort, Fatigue, Loss of Efficiency
• Sound quality in products
• Resonance is the tendency of a system to oscillate with greater amplitude at
some frequencies than at others.
