MELC: Troubleshoot Defective Fluorescent Lamp Assembly

 K to 12 BEC CG: (TLE_IAEL10EL-Ia-Iij-1)

Objectives:
1. Define fluorescent lamp and its parts.
2. Determine the steps on how to troubleshoot fluorescent lamp assembly.
3. Draw the wiring connection of fluorescent lamp.

Title of the Activity: Let’s Troubleshoot!

Most Essential Learning Competency: Troubleshoot Defective Fluorescent Lamp

Assembly.

PART 1: Identify Me!

A. Directions: Choose the correct answer and write the letter

on the space provided.
Fluorescent tube Ballast Frame
Lamp holder Starter Fluorescent lamp

___________1. It is a form of electric discharge light source.

__________2. It is called as the metal housing of the whole fixture.

__________3. These are the point of connection of the fluorescent and starter.

_________4. It is a glow switch that opens and closes the circuit so as to produce a high
voltage or inductive kick across the bulb at the filament during the starting
period.

__________5. What do you call a circular bulb containing mercury vapor and inert gas with
phosphor coating inside?

__________6.  Which of the following parts of fluorescent lamp produces high voltage to start
the lamp into operation?

B. Direction: True or False: Write T if the statement is true or F if it is false.

__________7. The ballast is the heart and brain of the fluorescent light.
__________8. The ballast provides the high voltage needed to fire the bulb, as well as the
current control to prevent the bulb from quickly failing due to excessive current
draw
__________9. A burnt-out lamp is the most common reason any light fixture does not light.
__________10. Lamp holders are small metal cylinders that transmit the electrical current from
the ballast to the sockets.
__________11. Repeated flickering or flashing will wear out the starter, causing the insulation at
the starter to deteriorate.
__________12. The ballast is the most likely part to fail and most easy to replace, so leave the
ballast for last when you start replacing parts.
PART 2: Step by Step!

Directions: Complete the steps in troubleshooting fluorescent lamp.

PART 3: Draw and Connect!

Directions: Draw the diagram and label the parts of a fluorescent lamp.
Answer Key:

Simple Activities

A. B.
1. Fluorescent lamp 7. T
2. Frame 8. T

3. Lamp holder/Starter socket 9. T

4. Starter 10. F
5. Fluorescent tube 11. T
6. Ballast 12. T

Moderate Activities

Fluorescent Tube
Start with the fluorescent tube or bulb. You can either install a new one
or, if you're not sure the tube is burned out, test the old tube in another
fluorescent fixture. Check the continuity of the fluorescent tube by using
muli-tester.

Starter
If the problem is not in the tube, try changing the starter. Fluorescent lamp
starters are rated by wattage, and it's important you use the right starter for
the tube in your fixture.

Ballast
The ballast is the least likely part to fail and most difficult to replace, so leave
the ballast for last when you start replacing parts.

Switch
If the tube, the starter, and the ballast are all working properly but the
lamp still doesn't light, check for a defective switch.
