Opening Prayer

Loving Father, we ask for your

guidance and enlightenment as we
tackle the topics on scientific attitudes,
discoveries and interventions of great
men and women of science. May this
lesson help transform ourselves toward
our intellectual growth. This we pray, in
Jesus name amen.

Introduction:
In this lesson, our focus would be first on scientific attitudes, its definition and
let us be aware of their value in character formation of the young minds and
hearts. Next we will deal with the contributions of outstanding scientists and
finally their role as a models for the young.

Pre-Assessment:

b. Has Scientific attitude something to do with inventions and
discoveries of scientists? Explain

 Relate scientific attitudes as an important part of intellectual growth.

 Name important scientists and their contribution to science.
 Discuss the role of scientists as models for the young

Lecture Notes/ Lesson:

The scope of our lesson is getting expanded for we started with the nature of
science, then we relate it to our daily activities, and it was followed by our
study on the application of science in the form of technology.

Today we try to be value-oriented as we stay focused on scientific attitudes

which are the characteristics that are developed through the experience of
science. It is because of the scientific attitudes that inventions and discoveries
came to be.

Here are some SCIENTIFIC ATTITUDES or values that one needs to develop
for intellectual growth:

1. PERSEVERANCE – One who perseveres must never give up. He must

be bold enough to do the impossible. To understand perseverance,
we should know that discoveries do not happen overnight. It takes a
lot of time, effort, sacrifice and other resources. A string of failures
should not stop anyone form satisfying his/her work must reflect the
truth about the findings. The practice of honesty provides correct
information that help in the development of science and technology.
2. HONESTY – Being honest is important in acquiring knowledge. A
scientist who gathers data from his/her work must reflect the truth
about the findings. The practice of honesty provides correct
information that help in the development of science and technology.
3. RESPONSIBILITY - true scientists hold themselves accountable for the
consequences of their study, as such, they must exercise caution to
avoid negative effects to living organism and the environment as a
whole.
4. DISCIPLINE – Scientists follow the scientific method which is made up
of a series of steps that was established to ensure the quality of a
scientific study. When scientist conduct an experiment they follow
procedure or methodology. They do not make shortcuts because it is
not a good idea.

Important Scientific Attitudes also includes Curiosity, Respect for evidence,

Open-mindedness, Hardwork and integrity.

CONTRIBUTIONS OF OUTSTANDING SCIENTIST

Our present knowledge of science is the result of hardwork and perseverance

of men and women who live before us.
Let us take a look at their lives and hopefully gain some inspiration from
them. They are few of many who made amazing discoveries:
1. Madame Curie – one of the most remarkable scientist in the history of
science. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1911
she won the second Nobel Prize award in Chemistry for her discovery of
isolation of radium. She had degrees in mathematics and physics and
contributed much to the understanding of radioactivity. She remained
humble in spite of achievements.
2. John Dalton – An English teacher, chemist and physicist. He is best
known for developing the old concept of atom into an atomic theory,
which was also the basis for modern atomic theory. He devised simple
but effective apparatuses for his experiments.
3. Isaac Newton- His work “Principia” became the basis for the scientific
method and laid the foundation for Physics. He worked on force and
motion, optics, mathematics, mechanics and gravitation.
4. Albert Einstein – he is best known for his energy and mass equation
(E=mc2). His “unified field” tory that would show the relationship of
electromagnetism and gravity, space and time occupied most of his
later years.

There are also FILIPINO SCIENTISTS who have made significant

contributions to science and technology
 FILIPINO SCIENTISTS

 Lourdes C. Cruz – biochemist whose research focused on extracting

toxins from deadly cone snails to make useful substances. Her studies
helped characterized over 50 biologically active peptides and were
later used as biochemical probes for examining the activities of the
human brain.
Dr. Cruz also established the Rural Livelihood incubator in 2001 with
the help of volunteers and private donors. This aimed to generate
employment opportunities and establish a suitable means of livelihood
to counter poverty and sociopolitical instability in rural areas,
particularly in a research site in Bataan.
She was awarded the title of National scientist, the highest honor given
to a man or woman of science in the Philippines.

 Fabian M. Dayrit – a chemist, who specialized on organo-metallic

chemistry. He joined a group of scientist studying medical plants.their
research established the effectively of vitex negundo (lagundi) for cold,
and through the combined efforts of various Philippine research
institutions, lagundi tablet and syrups were developed and are now
available as medicines in our country. His work on medical plant helps
the growth of phytochemistry in the Philippines.

 Maria Corazon A. de Ungria – a forensic scientist, currently the head of

the DNA Analysis laboratory of the Natural Sciences Research Institute
of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. She leads a
team of researchers in developing forensic DNA technology to be used
in crime investigation by collecting and Scientifically analyzing Physical
evidence.
Dr. de Ungria had been given several prestigious scientific awards like
outstanding young scientist in 2003 and 2006. UP Gawad Hall of Fame
for Best REPS in Research in 2005

The Role of scientists:

a. To present a role model for young people in the person of

scientists who achieved much because of hard work and
perseverance.
b. To counter the culture of instant wealth and success
c. An inspiration for the young as they develop a sense of pride in
the achievement of their fellow Filipinos.
d. Provide students with heroes they can look up to.
 DISCUSSION AND PROCESSING
You have learned about the definitions of scientific attitudes. How do these
attitudes influence your life? Briefly explain.

We are also happy of the contributions made by the scientists. As you read
their profiles and understand their lives, what impressed you about their
work and what inspiration were you able to acquire from them? Explain.

Scientists are also ordinary people like us. Do you think any of us can
become a scientist in we want to? How?

Summary/Generalization:

 Scientific attitude are characteristics that are developed through the

experience of science.
 Scientist have made discoveries, invention and contributions to science
and technology, to make the lives of people comfortable and easy, and
to solve the problems in our society.
 Role models for the young people who achieved much because of hard
work and perseverance are in the persons of our outstanding scientist.

Closing Prayer

Loving God, we thank you for giving us the inspiration through our learnings
today. We hope to emulate the scientific attitudes of the scientists because
by their perseverance and hard work they have come up with things useful
to humanity. Let these learners also reflect on the role models so all of us
may do the same. This we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
