Globalization relies on media as its main conduit for spreading global culture and ideas. Media reshape societies and allow communication with multiple people constantly, but can also amputate human senses and homogenize culture. While social media have democratized access to communication, they can also splinter cultures and ideas into isolated cyber communities and enable the spread of misinformation. As media continue causing social changes, people must find responsible ways to deal with the resulting unintended consequences.

 Globalization entails the spread of various cultures.


o Movies from different parts of the world especially from Hollywood is shown globally
o Music and songs, as well as literature are spread globally.
 There is an intimate relationship between globalization and media.
 Globalization relies on media as its main conduit for the spread of global culture and ideas.

Media and its Functions


 Media are means of conveying something, such as a channel of communication.
 Media are technologies of mass communication.
o Print Media – books, magazines, and newspapers
o Broadcast Media – radio, film, and television
o Digital Media – internet and mobile mass communication.
 Media reshape societies
 Media have advantages and disadvantages.
 Media have drawn people from meaningful activities.
 Media allow communication with multiple people constantly.
 Media amputate human senses, making the retention of memory become much lower.
 Media have turned the world into a global village
 Media have the tendency to homogenize culture
 Media messages are not only made by producers but are also consumed by audiences.
- The media consumers are active participants in the meaning-making process through their
cultural senses.
- Messages are received differently because meanings are derived differently.

Social Media and the Creation of Cyber Ghettoes


 Globalization of culture and ideas move in different directions.
 Social media have democratized access to communication
 Social media have enabled users to be consumers and producers of information simultaneously.
 Social media can be used to manipulate public opinions.
 Fake information and news can spread easily on social media
o Users must remain vigilant and learn how to distinguish fact from falsehood

 Social media will splinter cultures and ideas into bubbles of people who do not interact.
 Societies can never be completely prepared for the rapid changes in the systems of
communications.

 People must find ways of dealing with the changes responsibly and ethically.
