Introduction to SLSD’s Puppy

Raising Program

Thank you for looking into working with Scout’s Legacy!! Before you join our
little family, we want to give you some information about how we work, how to get
started, and what to expect after you join!
So the first step is to meet up one on one with our Puppy Raiser Coordinator, at
this time it is Amanda! You will need to sit down and talk about what is expected and
she will have you work with a dog slowly to see if you have the right confidence to
work with a puppy in public. After everything goes well we would talk about your
lifestyle and which puppy would fit your schedule! You will then receive a BUNCH of
homework and spend a week or more reading it and getting ready for the new pup!
When you receive the new dog, if it has already been in the program for a
while then we would have you spend 2 weeks training and videoing all that the dog
currently knows to make sure you and the dog know what is going on together. In that
time practice every day for 5-15 minutes on all the old cues so you two know how to
do everything together! You will be required to have a Facebook page so you can be
added to all the in training pages for the Service Dog in Training. You will also be
required to be able to record and post videos on that page so we can see the progress
and updates of the dog. It is a goal to get 1 video a week of training, so remember
this as you are out working with your pup.
There are lesson plans in place that you must train your pup to follow and
understand the commands exactly as we ask. This way there is a uniform pattern to
the dog’s knowledge so any puppy raiser and trainer can handle the dog, and the
owner knows exactly what to do. The lessons are written and videoed for you to learn
what we expect with each cue. You will be asked to join us at monthly group outings
and meet with the trainer on a consistent basis to make sure the puppy is growing and
training correctly. The costs for the puppy should be paid for by the client. If you wish
to help with those costs, they would be greatly appreciated! If you are training a
program dog, all the program can cover is vet and food costs. Treats will need to be
under your costs but you can use the food they should eat throughout the day as their
treat if they prefer it.
It will be hard work, a lot of patience, and constant communication, but this
will also be very rewarding! You will be providing independence to someone who has
none, and we thank you for even considering helping us!!
With Regards,
