I. The document finds the derivatives of four functions: 1) y=sin 4x + cos 3 4x, with derivative y' = 4 cos(4x) - 12 cos^2(4x) sin(4x) 2) y=ln(2-e^3x), with derivative y' = -3e^3x/(2-e^3x) 3) y=3x^2 log x, with derivative y' = 3(2ln(x) + x) 4) y=3x/(1+3x), with derivative y' = 3/(1+3x)^2 II. I. Find the derivative of y. Show the complete solution.

a. y=sin 4 x +cos3 4 x

Solution:

Using the sum/difference rule:

d d
sin ( 4 x ) + cos 3 ( 4 x )=4 ×cos ( 4 x )+(−12 cos2 ( 4 x ) sin ( 4 x ) )
dx dx

y ' =4 cos ( 4 x )−12 cos2 ( 4 x ) sin ( 4 x )

Simplifying:

y ' =4 cos ⁡(4 x )¿

b. y=ln ( 2−e 3 x )

Solution:

Using chain rule:

Let u = (2−e3 x )

d d 1
ln ( u ) ( 2−e3 x )= (−3 e 3 x )
du dx u
Substituting u:

' −3 e 3 x
y=
2−33 x

c. y=3 x 2 logx
Solution:

3 ( dxd ( x ln ( x ) ))
2

Using the product rule:

3 ( dxd ( x ) ln ( x )+ dxd ( ln ( x) ) x )=3(2 xln ( x )+ 1x x )

2 2 2

Simplifying:

y ' =3 ( 2 ln ( x )+ x )
3x
d. y=
1+3 x
Solution:

d x
3 (
dx 1+3 x )
Using the quotient rule:

d d
( x ) ( 1+3 x ) − ( 1+ 3 x ) x
dx dx 1 × ( 1+3 x )−3 x
3× 2
=3 ×
( 1+3 x ) ( 1+ 3 x )2
Simplifying:

3
y'=
( 1+ 3 x )2

II. The sum of two positive numbers is 10. Find the numbers if sum of their cubes is a
minimum.

Let x and y be two numbers.

F(x , y)=x 3 + y 3

Since x + y=10 , Then y=10−x

Therefore:

F (x , y )=x 3 + y 3=x 3 + ( 10−x )3=x 3−x 3 +30 x 2−300 x+1000

Simplifying:

30 x 2−300 x+1000=F ( x )

F ' ( x )=60 x−300

Critical points : F ' ( x )=0 → 60 x−300=0 , → x =5

F ' ' ( x ) =60>0

The function has a minimum at x=5

The ∑ of the cubes is a minimum when x=5 ,∧ y=10−x=5

Therefore, the two numbers corresponding to x and y are both 5.
