“Centre of Science for Villages”

Yearly Report (01st April 2018 to 31st March 2019)

Ecological Science and Technology Division (ESTD)
Introduction:
Ecological Science and Technology Division (ESTD) carried out research work
under Core Support Project” funded by “Science for Equity
Empowerment and Development” (SEED) Division, Department of
Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi. The project
dealt with
Agriculture Activities:
A) Organic Farming – Cotton (Gossypium herbacium); Soy Bean
(Glycin max); Pigeon’s Pea (Cajanus cajan); Wheat (Triticum
aestivum); Chick Pea (Cicer arientinum); Sugarcane (Saccherum
officinalis); Turmeric (Curcuma longa).
Results: Application of Amrut Pani and Vermi-compost or application of
5 cubic meters decomposed biomass plus BD 500 is recommended to
farmers. It increased productivity of crops significantly - Cotton 289%
Soy Bean 200% Pigeon’s Pea 149% Wheat 160% Chick Pea 206%
Sugarcane 278% & Turmeric 229%

Results of five years show that

application of manure and microbial
inoculums increased yield of Cotton
(B) Bio Manure - CSV has adopted different methods to meet nutrient
requirements of crops i.e. a) Amrut Paani, b) Vermi Compost, c)
Biodynamic Preparations and d) Compost.
Results: Farmers have adopted all four methods of nutrient
management successfully.

C) Innovative Crops - Phand (Rivea hypocretariformis); Phalsa (Grewia

subinaequalis); Bhui Kohla or Indian Kudzu (Pueraria tuberosa) and
Papadi (Ventilago denticuleta). Farmers are inclined to grow Phand and
Phalsa in their farm.
Income Generating Activities:
A) Food Processing: In the project 14 value added products of selected
innovative crops namely Phand (Rivea hypocretariformis); Phalsa
(Grewia subinaequalis); Bhui Kohla or Indian Kudzu (Pueraria
tuberose); Matalu (Dioscorea bulbifera); Bhokar (Cordia rothii) are
made.

B) Herbal Medicine: Did work on Gunja (Abrus precatorious); Kalihari

(Gloriosa superba) and Kavach BeeJ (Mucuna pruriens)
C) Non Timber Forest Produce (NTFP): Two species are selected in this
category namely Bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus) and Palm (Phoenix
sylvestris)

D) Handmade Paper and Board: Fibrous stems of Ghaneri (Lantana

camera); Tuar (Cajanus cajan); Cotton (Gossypium herbacium);
Besharam (Ipomoea fistulosa) & Ambadi (Hibiscus subdariffa) are used
successfully as raw materials to derive pulp and convert it in to board
having multiple uses.

Results: Food Processing – 14 value added products are made from

05 innovative crops; Herbal Medicine – Selected three medicinal
plants are now cultivated by some farmers. Medicinal plants are
processed to make 05 value added products; NTFP – Four products of
Palm and a dozen products of Bamboo are made popular in society;
Handmade Paper and Board – Method is optimized to make Boards
and half a dozen value added products from boards.

Technology benefits to society:

Organic Farming has benefitted more than 1,700 farmers;
Innovative Crops benefitted more than 250 villagers;
Food Processing benefited more than 1,000 tribal and villagers.
NTFP subject benefitted 700 Architects and 700 tribal

Non Farm Activity - Expertise developed to address location-specific

problems:
Model of conserving and utilizing Microbial and Plant Biodiversity in
organic farming is replicable in rural areas.
Processing of Innovative Crops in rural community generated
opportunity for entrepreneurship development. The system is self
multiplying
