Integration by Parts PDF

1. This handout discusses techniques for evaluating integrals that cannot be solved using standard formulas or manipulations, focusing on integration by parts (IBP). 2. IBP involves selecting a function u and dv such that the integral of the product of u and dv can be written as the integral of udv plus the integral of vdu, where v is the antiderivative of dv and du is the derivative of u. 3. The handout provides guidelines for selecting u and dv and works through 25 examples applying IBP to evaluate various integrals.

MATH 115 – integral calculus

Handout #7
Techniques of Integration
There are integrals not readily solvable by the use of any integral formulas or by any ordinary
manipulation. Hence, we need to resort to the ultimate remedies through special manipulations that will
lead to the evaluation of integrals.

A. Integration By Parts (IBP)

Consider the differential of the product,

d (uv)  udv  vdu

 d (uv)   udv   vdu

Steps in using the IBP formula:

 Select u and dv .
 Differentiate u and integrate dv .
 Apply the IBP formula.
Note: The choice of u and dv is subject to trial and error. However, two guidelines can be stated for
the appropriate choice of u and dv
1. dv must be readily integrable.

2.  vdu must not be more complicated than the problem to be evaluated.
