Writing Development
I have noticed improvement with my own writing throughout this course. One of the ways in
which my writing improved was during the planning process. In courses in the past where I was not
required to turn in a rough draft, it was easier to skip over the outlining and drafting steps of the writing
process. In this course, we were required to at least submit some work for discussions and peer review. I
was able to practice that planning process more, which made the writing process go a lot smoother. I did
not feel as though I was cramming to write a paper last minute and was able to develop my ideas.
Course Goals
In my first discussion assignment I wrote that I was taking this course as a requirement for the
Computer Science major but was looking forward to it because I enjoy writing. My career goals are to
work in a role that helps businesses solve problems using technology, which means that I need to have
the technical knowledge but also be able to communicate effectively. My goals for this class were to
continue learning and practicing effective communication techniques. The discussions and assignments
that we completed over the short semester seemed to help with that goal, especially since we were
required to communicate about a specific topic that we were interested in. For this course I wrote about
solutions to problems that hurricanes cause, but it is easy to see how this skill could be adapted to fit
any type of problem/solution. The instructions and usability packet was particularly helpful for my
communication goals, as it can be challenging to write instructions down. The company I worked for
prior to going back to school experienced a lot of growth, and training others became necessary. A lot
of what we had learned was learned on the job or self-taught, so it was challenging to write out what we
knew in a way that could be read and understood by new hires. After completing that assignment, I
would have been in a much better position to create effective training manuals if I had to go back and do
it again.
Assignments
The assignments for this course were interesting and engaging. It was helpful to be able to pick a
topic out of a selection that I was interested in. Enjoying the subject matter makes it easier to learn. The
assignment that I was most proud of was the Instructions and Usability packet. It was hard at first to
think of something I knew how to do that someone else would care to read about, which required some
reflection which is important to do. Of course, there things that I know how to do, but it was challenging
to think of something that I could explain step-by-step as well. I imagine some of the other students feel
the same way, as I saw a lot of interesting topics for that assignment. It seems like people really put a lot
of work into that assignment. The spheres video project was another that was interesting and outside of
my normal comfort zone. I have done some multimedia projects before, but I enjoyed how we were able
to make that one personal by using a space that was familiar to us. There is a park next to my
neighborhood that has a boardwalk next to the river, which is where I chose to shoot my video spheres.
I had a lot of fun working on that and got to enjoy a nice day outside too.
