What is women empowerment?

Women empowerment is one of the most significant factors which is presently being examined
in nearly all developing countries. In this research paper, an attempt is made to investigate the
determinants which have an influence on women empowerment in Pakistan.
Introduction
Women’s empowerment is the process of strengthening women. Strengthening can be defined
from multiple ways but in case of discussing women’s strengthening , strengthening implies
allowing women who are on the outside of the decision-making process into it.it also refers to
the way towards expending women’s access to control over strategic life choices and actions
that influence them to access to the open doors that permit them completely to understand
their abilities. It implies control over resources and decisions.
“No nation can rise to the height of glory unless your women are side by side with you; we
are victims of evil customs. It is a crime against humanity that our women are shut up within
the four walls of the houses as prisoners. There is no sanction anywhere for the deplorable
condition in which our women have to live.” – Muhammad Ali Jinnah, 1944
History
Before 1980s, women’s empowerment was not taught or even empowered in state funded
schools and society on the loose. But in 1987, the United States Congress devoted the period of
March as National Women's History Month. Every year, the president gives a decree regarding
the accomplishments of ladies. Since the commitment began in 1987, schools the nation over
have made Women's History Month a fundamental piece of the educational program.
Women empowerment in Pakistan
In 1995, nearly a half-century after the creation of Pakistan, the National Report for the Fourth
UN World Conference for Women had to admit that women "continue to suffer in the face of
oppressive patriarchal structures, rigid orthodox norms and stifling socio-cultural customs and
traditions in Pakistan”.
Politics is a domain of power, and in Pakistan it is emphatically male ruled. According to
population indicators report of World Bank 2011, “Women constitute 49% of the Pakistan’s
population, being unutilized in the national development due to their low skill, less education
and less empowerment in the realm of politics”. Patriarchal setup and social stereotypes
dismiss their capabilities and create persistent hurdles in their way of empowerment. Major
political positions are still in the possession of men while ladies are delimited to delicate
profiles just, which at last risk their degree of strengthening in Pakistan.
Men and women are substantial part of any society but in male dominated societies, female
population is the denied and underestimated gathering of society. If men and women were
created equal, the phenomenon of empowerment of women illustrates that initially they have
been disempowered, the wonder of strengthening of ladies represents that at first they have
been debilitated and as a backslide, they are urged to hold some power for the prosperity of
the family or the general public however most importantly, for themselves. Empowerment of
women is generally seen in relation to men. The status of men is the estimating device for
scaling how much strengthening is required with respect to women. On the other hand, the
empowerment of women is also seen as a threat to the singular rule of men, but it needs to be
clarified that empowering women does not imply disempowering men; they can both remain in
power simultaneously. Such a strengthening is based, not just limited to the physical or
material parts of life yet it additionally reflects their intellectual and emotional and this
relationship is complementary in nature.
