A Day in The Life of A Computer Engineer

Computer engineers design, test, implement and maintain both computer software and hardware systems. They ensure the physical hardware and software programming components work together smoothly. Computer engineers conduct research, design hardware components like processors and circuit boards, write software, design and test networks, and manage operating systems. They can find work in industries like software/hardware corporations, aeronautics, defense contracting, government, gaming, finance, healthcare, and education/research institutions. Some career options for computer engineers include AI designer, software engineer, network security specialist, robotics specialist, and video game programmer.

Computer Engineer Careers

Computer Engineers develop and improve the software programs and hardware that make computers
run. Computer Engineers may specialize in either software or hardware.

From operating system software, such as Windows and Linux, to individual computer programs, such as
Photoshop and Microsoft Office, Software Engineers turn piles of hardware into fully functional
computers. Hardware Engineers develop the hardware of computers, including the motherboards,
graphics and audio cards and drives that are later programmed by Software Engineers.

A Day in the Life of a Computer Engineer

Computer Engineers program and maintain games, email programs, software tools for businesses and
schools, operating systems and hardware. When something isn't working with the email client at work or a
bug turns up in the latest release of a computer operating system, Computer Engineers use their
knowledge of coding and computer frameworks to solve the problem. Computer Engineers work in a
variety of settings from corporate offices to schools and government laboratories.

What does a computer engineer do?

Computer engineers design, test, implement and maintain computer software and
hardware systems. They ensure that both the physical hardware components and
software programming components work together smoothly for their clients. Some
computer engineers specialize in fields such as robotics, virtual reality, artificial
intelligence, mobile apps and operating systems. Computer engineer duties include:

 Conducting research on software and computer hardware

 Designing and testing computer hardware components, such as processors, circuit
boards, memory devices and routers
 Writing and testing software for mobile devices and computers
 Designing, setting up and testing networks
 Managing operating systems
 Designing and testing robots
 Creating programming to support a range of products, from aircraft components to
surgical technology

Computer engineers can find employment in different industries and can work in many
different capacities. Here are some examples of places where computer engineers can
find work:

 Software or hardware corporations

 Aeronautical firms
