Instructions
• This Home Assignment will replace the Open Book Test for this course in the academic
year2019/2020.
• Answer all questions.
• Each of the two questions is allocated fifty marks distributed as indicated.

1. i) State whether each of the following statements is true or false. In each case, give
reasons for your answer.
a) In a scatter plot of the data with the least squares fitted line, a point (𝑥, 𝑦) lies on
the fitted line indicates that the corresponding observation has no random error.
b) In the simple linear regression model 𝑦 = 𝛽0 + 𝛽1 𝑥 2 + 𝜀, the parameter 𝛽1
represents the expected change in the response associated with one unit of change
in the predictor variable.
c) Simple linear regression model with constant variance assumes that the responses
obtained at different levels always vary from the mean of the response
corresponding to that level by the same amount.
(5x3 = 15 marks)
ii) Answer each of the following with clear reasoning:
a) What does the error term in the simple linear regression model 𝑦 = 𝛽0 + 𝛽1 𝑥 +
𝜀 represents and what are the parameters that are related to it?
b) Why do we select the variable that is less controllable as the response variable
in fitting a simple linear regression model?

ii) State whether each of the following is suitable as the regression function 𝑓(𝑥, 𝛽) for a

simple linear regression model or not. In each case, give reasons for your answer.

a) 𝑓(𝑥, 𝛽) = 𝛽0 + 𝛽1 √𝑥, where 𝛽 = (𝛽0 , 𝛽1 )𝑇 .

b) 𝑓(𝑥, 𝛽) = 𝛽0 + 𝑥, where 𝛽 = 𝛽0.

c) 𝑓(𝑥, 𝛽) = 𝛽0 𝛽1 +𝛽1 𝑥 2 , where 𝛽 = (𝛽0 , 𝛽1 )𝑇 .

2. i) State whether each of the following statements is true or false. If the statement is false,
explain why it is false.
a) In a study to estimate the optimal temperature that gives the highest dried weight
of a precipitate from a chemical reaction, a researcher measured the dried weights
of the precipitate (in mg) received from 100 samples that were maintained at known
temperatures varying from 20 0C to 80 0C. The data collected on the dried weights
were almost similar with negligible variation. The Pearson correlation calculated
from the data collected will be close to +1.

b) In a class of 40 students, the marks for the Open Book Test had varied from 30 to
90. For the NBT, each and every student had scored ten marks less than their OBT
mark. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the OBT and NBT marks will
be -1.

c) In a population, each family is known to spend exactly half of the income on food.
The Pearson correlation between the income and expenditure on food of 80 persons
sampled from this population will be close to 0.5

d) Pearson correlation coefficient close to zero is an indication that the explanatory


variable is of no use as a predictor for the response variable.

ii) The data given below are the lengths (cm) and weights (grams) of a sample (𝑛 = 20)
of a certain fish species. Calculate the Pearson correlation coefficient and clearly
describe what can be concluded from the value obtained.
