Seatwork/Assignment: Standard Time Normal Time

This document contains examples and questions related to work measurement and time study techniques. It provides calculations to determine normal time, standard time, rating factors, and allowance factors given various input data about work elements, observed times, ratings, and conditions. It also includes questions about determining sample sizes needed for time studies based on desired accuracy and variability in observed times. The key outputs are normal times, standard times, and sampling requirements to estimate true means within a given level of accuracy.

SEATWORK/ASSIGNMENT

1. Given that an essential work element is involved in each case, you are asked
to determine the following:
a. The normal time for an element when the operator’s selected time is
0.73 minute and her rating is 110 percent.
normal time = observed time x rating factor
= (0.73) x (1.1) = 0.803
b. The rating factor if the normal time is 0.28 minute and the selected time
was 0.35 minute.
0.28 = (0.35) x (rating factor)
rating factor = 0.8
c. The normal time for an element when the standard time is 14.91 minutes
and the allowance factor is 1.34.
14.91 = (normal time) x (1.34)
normal time = 11.13
d. The allowance factor applied is the standard time for an element is 0.19
minute and the normal time was 0.15 minute.
Standard time 0.19
allowance factor = =
normal time 0.15

=1.266
e. The selected time for an element if the standard time is 1.06 minutes, the
allowance factor is 1.25, and the operator’s rating is 69 percent.
Standard time = selected time x rating factor x allowance factor
1.06 = (selected time) x (0.69) x (1.25)
1.06
selected time =
(1.25) x (0.69)

= 1.2289
2. Carolyn Barrett, a marketing surveyor, takes an average of 10 minutes to
complete a particular questionnaire. Carolyn’s performance rating (pace) is
110% and there is an allowance of 15% (job time).
a. What is the normal time for completing this questionnaire?
(total time)(% working onthe task)(rating)
Normal time =
(number of units produced)
= ¿¿
b. What is the standard time for completing this questionnaire?
Total Normal time 11 11
Standard time     12.9 minutes
1-Allowance factor 1  0.15 .85

3. Determine the value of the normal time in each of the following cases, in which
the Westinghouse system of performance rating was employed:
a. A materials handler in a government warehouse completed the essential
elements of a job in an average time of 0.174 hour. His skill was
considered to be Fair (E1), his effort to be Good (C2), and his
consistency to be Excellent; conditions were considered to be Average.
Skill – Fair E1 = -0.05
Efforts – Good C2 = +0.02
Consistency – Excellent = +0.03
Conditions – Average = 0.00
sum of rating = 0.00 means that the worker is doing average performance
Therefore, the normal time is 0.174 hour.
c. The operator of a sewing machine required an average of 2.31 mins to
complete an element of work while being timed. Conditions were rated as
Ideal; her consistency was rated as Perfect, her effort as Poor (F1), and
her skill as Superskill (A2).
Skills – Super Skill A2 = +0.13
Efforts – Poor F1 = -0.12
Consistency – Perfect = +0.04
Conditions – Ideal = +0.06
sum of rating = 0.11
normal time = 2.31/1.11 = 2.081 minutes
4. How many work cycles should be timed to estimate if the maximum error
is 2 seconds of the sample mean with a confidence of 99 percent. A pilot
study yielded these times (seconds): 25, 27, 23, 28, 26, 25, 24, 28, and
23. (z=2.58).
25+27+23+28+ 26+25+24 +28+23
mean = =25.44
9
( 2.58 ) (0.253)
no. of work cycle =
2
= 0.32637
5. A work measurement analyst in the Dorben Company took 10
observations of a high-production job. He rated each cycle and then
computed the mean normal time for each element. The element with the
greatest dispersion had a mean of 0.30 minutes and a standard deviation
of 0.03 minutes. If it is desirable to have sampled data within 5 percent of
the true data, how many observations should this time study analyst take
of this operation? (z=2.62).
ts 2
No. of observation n = ( )
kx
2.62 x 0.03 2
n=( )
0.05 x 0.3
no. of observation = 28
6. On the table below, summarizing the 10 observations made by an analyst,
determine the normal time, and the standard time for the operation.
