Practice 1

This document summarizes three different car commercials. For each commercial, it identifies the main claim, whether reasons are provided, what type of appeal is used, and the target audience. The first Subaru commercial uses pathos by showing dogs to appeal to dog lovers. The second Ford commercial uses logos by providing engineering evidence to appeal to those needing a capable vehicle. The third Audi commercial for Saudi Arabia uses pathos to appeal to women who previously could not drive by simply showing a woman driving.

After each
commercial answer the following questions before moving on to the next commercial.
Commercial 1: The Subaru Poodle Commercial
What is the main claim of the advertisement?
The commercial is aimed at persuading you to buy a Subaru brand vehicle.
Does the advertisement provide any reasons for the claim?
They say that it’s dog tested and dog approved. There are no reasons for the
claim. The commercial is super short and only says those few words at the end.
What types of appeals does the advertisement use? Ethos, Pathos, Logos? I
believe that this commercial is an example of pathos. It uses dogs and they are being
shown as a couple. There are no examples of ethos or logos.
Based on your answers, who is the audience for this advertisement?
The commercial is meant for anyone but it may appeal to those who like dogs
more than those who don’t.
Commercial 2: The Ford Ranger - Science of Truck
What is the main claim of the advertisement?
The commercial claims that you should buy a Ford Ranger.
Does the advertisement provide any reasons for the claim?
According to the advertisement, it is engineer tested.
Does the advertisement provide any evidence?
They say that the engineers tested the cars to the limits. Showing clips of what
they did, they use the truck to pull a sled full of rocks. They explain how the truck
is able to keep going without getting stuck.
What types of appeals does the advertisement use? Ethos, pathos, or Logos?
This commercial is an example of logos. They try to provide evidence through videos
and explanations that are engineer approved.
Based on your answers, who is the audience for this advertisement?
I would say the target audience for this advertisement are people that need a
vehicle to do any type of task on any terrain. Those who strictly use their vehicles
for travel purposes would most likely get a different type of vehicle.
Commercial 3: Audi Welcomes Women to the Driver's Seat
What is the main claim of the advertisement?
I believe the claim is that women should be able to drive too. Either that, or it isn’t really
a claim but instead a statement.
Does the advertisement provide any reasons for the claim?
There are no reasons for the claim. We were just presented with clips of the woman
getting into the driver's seat and driving.
Does the advertisement provide any evidence?
There is no evidence to support this commercial.
What types of appeals does the advertisement use? Pathos (causing an
emotional reaction), Ethos (showing its sources for information, acknowledging
alternative viewpoints, and providing credible testimony), or Logos (providing
clear reasons and evidence, appealing to the viewers intellect or rational mind).
I think this commercial is an example of pathos. There are no alternative viewpoints or
clear reasons.
Based on your answers, who is the audience for this advertisement?
This commercial may appeal most to the women who have not been able to have
these kinds of privileges that in the United States we take for granted. This is
most likely due to religion or just the values and beliefs in their culture.
