Assignment 4

This document outlines an assignment for a Solid Waste Management course. The assignment contains 11 questions related to various topics in solid waste processing, including waste compaction, shredding, separation techniques, screening, dewatering, drying, and determining the efficiency of a rotary screen. Students are asked to discuss concepts, benefits and drawbacks, different equipment, selection criteria, and provide sketches to explain processes like hammer mills, hydropulpers, and magnetic separation. The final question involves using experimental data to calculate the recovery efficiency and effectiveness of a rotary screen processing 150 tonnes/hour of solid waste.

All answers should be in your words
Q1. Discuss the main objectives or purpose associated in the context of waste processing.

Q2. Discuss some of the benefits and drawbacks associated with waste compaction and
present a detailed discussion on the different equipment’s associated with compaction. Also
explain the reasons behind selection of a particular compacting equipment.

Q3. Explain the concept of waste shredding, its implementation and different equipment’s
associated with the process. Also discuss the different factors which affect the selection of
size reduction equipment.

Q4. With a neat sketch explain the working of the following (a) hammer mill and (b)
hydropulper and (c) chemical volume reaction.

Q5. In the context of air separation technique, discuss the following with neat sketches where
applicable (a) selection criteria of air separation equipment (b) open inlet vibrator (c) zigzag
air classifier (d) conventional chute separator

Q6. In the context of magnetic separation, discuss the following with neat sketches where
applicable (a) suspended type permanent magnetic separator (b) pulley type permanent
magnetic separator (c) selection criteria for magnetic separation equipment.

Q7. In the context of screening of solid wastes, discuss the following with neat sketches
where applicable (a) selection criteria for screening equipment (b) rotary drum screen.

Q8. In the context of other screening techniques of solid wastes, discuss the following with
neat sketches where applicable (a) hand sorting (b) inertial separation [ballistic, inclined] (c)
floatation and (d) optical sorting [electronic sorter].

Q9. Write a short note on dewatering of solid waste.

Q10. Write a short note on drying of solid waste. In this context, discuss the working of (a)
Counter-current Direct-Heat Rotary Drum Dryer.

Q11. Given that 150 tonne/h of solid waste is applied to a rotary screen for the removal of
glass prior to shredding, determine the recovery efficiency and effectiveness of the screen,
based on the following experimental data:
(i) The percentage of glass in solid waste = 10 %
(ii) Total weight of material in under flow = 12 tonne/h
(iii) Weight of glass in screen underflow = 7.8 tonne/h
(iv) Assume any other suitable data if required.
