WARNING
Read this entire manual and all other publications pertaining to the work to
be performed before installing, operating, or servicing this equipment.
Practice all plant and safety instructions and precautions. Failure to follow
instructions can cause personal injury and/or property damage.
The engine, turbine, or other type of prime mover should be equipped with
an overspeed (overtemperature, or overpressure, where applicable)
shutdown device(s), that operates totally independently of the prime mover
control device(s) to protect against runaway or damage to the engine,
turbine, or other type of prime mover with possible personal injury or loss of
life should the mechanical-hydraulic governor(s) or electric control(s), the
actuator(s), fuel control(s), the driving mechanism(s), the linkage(s), or the
controlled device(s) fail.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to a control system that uses an alternator or battery-
charging device, make sure the charging device is turned off before
disconnecting the battery from the system.

Electrostatic Discharge Awareness
2. Avoid the build-up of static electricity on your body by not wearing clothing
made of synthetic materials. Wear cotton or cotton-blend materials as much
as possible because these do not store static electric charges as much as
synthetics.
4. Do not remove the printed circuit board (PCB) from the control cabinet
unless absolutely necessary. If you must remove the PCB from the control
cabinet, follow these precautions:
• When replacing a PCB, keep the new PCB in the plastic antistatic
protective bag it comes in until you are ready to install it. Immediately
after removing the old PCB from the control cabinet, place it in the
antistatic protective bag.
CAUTION
To prevent damage to electronic components caused by improper
handling, read and observe the precautions in Woodward manual
82715, Guide for Handling and Protection of Electronic Controls,
Printed Circuit Boards, and Modules.

Installation
Unpacking
Before handling the control, read Chapter 2, Electrostatic Discharge Awareness.
Check the control for signs of damage. If any damage is found notify the shipper.
The Compact Disc (CD) included in the package contains important software,
handle this CD carefully and insure it is not discarded with packing materials.
Location Considerations
Mount the GCP Control in a clean, dry place. The panel cutout dimensions are
given in Figure 1-1. Allow room at the sides of the device for the retaining
buckets, access to the Remote Configuration cable connector, and the display
brightness adjustment. Allow room at the back of the device for the wiring to the
terminal blocks, and terminal block removable.
Mounting
Remove the retaining brackets on each side of the device by rotating them
Counter-Clockwise. Insert the device into the panel cutout form the front.
Reattach the retaining brackets and hold the device in place while tightening
adjustable screws on the brackets.

NOTE
Connected inductances (e. g. Coils of operating current or
undervoltage tripping devices, auxiliary contactors and power
contactors) must be wired with an appropriate interference
protection.

The above wiring connection diagram is shown for a switching sensor (proximity
probe) device powered from a 24 Vdc source. A switching device should be
capable of operating over a frequency range of 5.0% to 130% engine speed. For
an inductive or Magnetic Pick Up (MPU) the Minimum Speed input signal is 0.5
VRMS at 25 °C. This minimum voltage is temperature dependent, the minimum
input voltage increases by approximately 0.3 V/°C. EXAMPLE: If the ambient
temperature of the GCP-30 mounting location is 45 °C, the minimum input 6.5
VRMS.
NOTE
The minimum input voltage increases by approximately 0.3 V/°C

CAN Interface
The CAN port is used for communication between GCP Controllers or with a
Gateway Device to communicate with an external Human-Machine-Interface
(HMI)
NOTE
Please note that the CAN bus must be terminated at the first and last
controller in the system with a resistor which corresponds to the
wave impedance of the cable (e. g. 120 Ohm). Terminals X1 and X2 of
intermediate controllers must have no connection.
NOTE
For Commutation between GCP-31/32 Controllers and HMI(s) via the
CAN Port, you need an interface Gateway device to convert the CAN
protocol to Modbus, Profibus, or modem. An external HMI can then
monitor the system parameters that are available through the CAN
port. For Direct Parameterization through the CAN connection, a CAN
to RS232 LeoPC Gateway is needed with LeoPC 1 software and
corresponding configuration files.
Parameterization/Configuration Port
20 Woodward
Manual 26131 GCP–32/31 Gen Control
The configuration port connector is located on the side of the GCP 30 controller.
It can be used to configure the GCP-31/32 using a configuration cable and
external computer.
NOTE
To Commutate with GCP-31/32 Controllers via the Configuration Port,
an interface cable (Woodward # 5417-557). LeoPC 1 program
(supplied with the cable) and the corresponding configuration files
are required. Please consult the online help installed when the
program is installed for a description of the LeoPC 1 PC program and
its setup.

Chapter 4.
Functional Description
Introduction
Configuration of the GCP–30 series controllers requires that close attention be
given to the setpoints and functions that are enabled or disabled and the operation
of the system(s) affected by these configurations.
Options
This manual covers six GCP-30 models and their options:
• Please refer to the wiring diagram and the notes on the options. Refer to the
nameplate for the model and or part number of the unit. If the nameplate is not
available, all parameterization screens can be called up in succession and the
options can be compiled with the assistance of this operating manual.
• The exact text of the configuration display screens will vary for different
models. If an option is not available in a model, that display for configuration is
eliminated.
Control Inputs
Woodward 23
GCP–32/31 Gen Control Manual 26131
NOTE
Any possible emergency power ("Emergency power" parameterization screen
must be set to ON) or Critical-Emergency operation (terminal 6 must be
parameterized accordingly) will be carried out in the "TEST" and
"AUTOMATIC" operating modes regardless of the inputs "Automatic 1" and
"Automatic 2". If Automatic 1 and Automatic 2 are set simultaneously, priority
is given to Automatic 1.
If a setpoint value is specified externally (e. g. via an analog input 0/4..20 mA or a bi-
directional interface), the external setpoint value is adjusted with the digital input (see
Table of setpoint values).

Manual 26131 GCP–32/31 Gen Control
Multifunction Digital input terminal 6 may reveal different functions according to the following
Terminal 6 description. Please note that, when used as a critical input, the digital input reveals
negative functional logic. The selection of the logic circuit is made using a
parameterization screen (“Function of Terminal Setting”, p. 130).
• Engine release Terminal 6 in this case has the same function as the STOP
button: Resetting terminal 6 (application of a LOW signal)
prevents the motor's starting, and stops the unit if this is already
running; the application of a HIGH signal releases the starting
of the unit; the application of a high signal enables the unit for
startup. Caution: Via this function, emergency power
operation is also prevented or aborted. Emergency power is not
possible without this release signal! The Engine release function
is only possible in "AUTOMATIC" operating mode.

message. An exclamation ( ! ) appears in front of the value
when the Warning Limit is exceeded. In the case of a wire
break, the input value is overwritten with "--.-". At the same
time, the fault output of the assigned fault class occurs.
“Pickup/Gen.Freq” This fault message is shown in the display if the engine pickup
speed deviates excessively (≈10 Hz) from the generator
frequency.
“GCB syn. Failure” If the synchronization time or the connect time for the
generator circuit breaker has been exceeded, this message is
shown. At the same time, a fault class F1 fault is output.
“MCB syn. Failure” If the synchronization time or the connect time for the mains
circuit breaker has been exceeded, this message is shown. At
the same time, a fault class F1 fault is output.
"GCB open failure” If closing of the GCB has not been successful following 5
"GCB close failure” closing attempts, the message "GCB CLOSED failure" is
shown in the display. If "Reply: GCB is open" is not received 2
seconds following the "Command: GCB open" pulse, the
message "GCB OPEN failure" is displayed. At the same time, a
fault class F1 fault is output.

shown in the display. If "Reply: MCB is open" is not received
2 seconds following the "Command: MCB open" pulse, the
message "MCB OPEN failure" is displayed. At the same time,
a fault class F1 fault is output.
"Power not zero” The Circuit breaker logic "interchange synchronization" has
been selected and the MCB is to be opened. If the incoming
power cannot be reduced to zero within the time set in the
"Max. start/stop ramp time" screen, this message is displayed.
"Fault df/dVmax." If, following starting and the expiration of the "GCB black start
max. time" and the generator has not reached the voltage and
frequency window allocated to it, this message is displayed.
"Stop failure" If speed is still detected 30 seconds following the stop signal
(Run signal removed), the message "Stop Failure" is output and
an F3 fault output.
"Not wanted stop" After the unit's starting process was completed and the unit has
reached run speed, this message is display if the generator
frequency suddenly drops to 0 Hz, due to external cause(s).
(Note: Since engine monitoring is deactivated until the firing
speed is reached, and the delay expired, no underfrequency can
be detected during starting. This message is not suppressed due
to the delayed unit monitoring.)

the mains and the MCB is closed. After closing
the mains power circuit breaker, the unit
assumes its original operating mode.
If the mains returns during starting, the mains power
circuit breaker is not opened. During the mains settling
time, the unit operates without load, in order to enable
the immediate connection of the GCB in the event of
further mains faults.

power delay time expires before the unit is started. On
reaching the voltage and frequency limit values, the
MCB is opened, and the GCB is then switched to the
black busbar. The unit takes over the supply of the
isolated network.
Return of the mains Following the return of the mains voltage, the unit waits

state setting can be used to output a fixed controller position. By
adjusting the initial state value, the speed controller output can
be adjusted. If "MANUAL" operating mode has been selected,
the initial state signal is output with the "START" button. On
setting the "STOP" button, the analog controller is switched off
again.
General settings
CAUTION
The following must be observed regarding the controller setting:
• Ensure that the emergency shutdown system is ready for use.
• While determining the critical frequency, pay attention to the
amplitude and frequency of the engine speed or generator voltage
oscillations.
If the oscillations become uncontrollable: Activate EMERGENCY
SHUTDOWN
The setting rule described below only serves as an example. Whether this method
is suitable for setting your particular system has not been and cannot be taken
into account as each controlled system behaves uniquely.
Woodward 49

There are various methods of setting a controller. The setting rules of Ziegler and
Nichols are explained below (determination for abrupt disturbances on the

desired operation may not be possible.
CAUTION
If the unit starts to oscillate uncontrollably, carry out an emergency
shutdown and alter the screen setting accordingly.

Manual 26131 GCP–32/31 Gen Control
Active power distribution via the CAN bus
How a unit carries out active power or frequency control in isolated operation in
parallel with other gensets, is defined by the "active power distribution reference
variable" parameter .A percent (%), or ratio of the “Active and/or Reactive
Power” Distribution parameter (p. 89). In this case, a setting of 10 % means
increased active power control and closer load sharing, and 90 % means
increased frequency control and less frequency variation with load level. This
parameter must be input individually for each unit.
In a distribution control system, it must be noted that each unit calculates the
mean utilization factor of all units from the data transmitted on the CAN bus,
and then compares this with its own utilization factor. The utilization factor is
compared with the units ‘old’ reference variable, and results in a new
reference variable. Frequency and active power control are simultaneously
carried out in these units.

Chapter 6.
Parameterization Screens
Introduction
Various groups of parameters are placed together in blocks to allow you to
navigate through the large number of parameterization screens more rapidly.
Selecting "YES" or "NO" to a group heading has no effect on whether or not
control or monitoring, is carried out. The input merely has the following effects:
YES The parameterization screens in the next block of that heading are
displayed and can either be viewed ( 12 "Select" button) or modifications can be
made to the parameters ( 14 "Cursor →", 13 "Digit ↑" or 12 "Select" buttons). This
is not a decision to enable the function, only to configure and setup the function.
NO The parameters for a function are not displayed, cannot be modified and are
therefore skipped.
for a longer period of time, the scroll function will be activated, and the screens
will be browsed rapidly. Simultaneously pressing the 12 "select" and 14
"cursor→" buttons allows you to scroll backward to the last four
parameterization screens. Exception: The service routine and the break from the
first to the last screen. If no entry, modification or any other action is carried out
for 60 seconds, the unit automatically returns to the basic screen.
Woodward 71
GCP–32/31 Gen Control Manual 26131
NOTE
Once a code level is entered, the unit remains at that code level. To
exit code level CL1 or CL2 enter an incorrect code number, the code
level is then set to CL0 and the unit is therefore locked for external
users (password input on p. 78). Two hours after the last input to the
unit, the code level is automatically set to CL0. To access level CL1 or
CL2 again, it is necessary to enter the proper code number.
Load Language
(B/X units only)
In order to load a different language into the unit, proceed as follows:
1.) Make a connection between your PC and the unit via the direct
parameterization cable (DPC) or via GW 4. To do this insert one end in the
COM-Port of the PC and the other end in the socket on the side of the unit.
2.) Enter the password for code level into the unit.
3.) Using the Select Button on the display, scroll down until you reach the
parameterization screen "Load Language".
5.) Scroll down until you reach the parameterization screen "Language number"
and select the base language in which you enter "0".
6.) At the screen "Number of tool" enter the number (1-8) with which you
operate the unit via LeoPC. These numbers are identical to the generator
numbers.
7.) Now start the PC program LeoPC 1 and load the corresponding language
files.
9.) Click the checkmark "All" that appears in the popup menu and next on
"Transmit language".
72 Woodward
Manual 26131 GCP–32/31 Gen Control
10.) If, after transmission of the first language, an additional language is to be
loaded, the SECOND language must be selected in the parameterization
screen "Sprache/language" of the unit or enter a "one" in the "Language
number" screen. Then you can repeat steps 6.) through 9.).
Direct Parameterization
(Parameterization Using the Lateral Plug)
NOTE
To carry out parameterization using the side plug (direct
parameterization), you require a direct parameterization cable (order
code "DPC"), the LeoPC 1 program (supplied with the cable) and the
corresponding configuration files. The LeoPC 1 PC program has
online help installed with it, refer to the Help files for a description of
the software and its setup.
WARNING
If the parameter "Direct parameterization" is set to "YES",
communication by the interface at terminals X1-X5 is locked off. If
communication is to be re-established through X1-X5 after
configuring the unit (e. g. CAN bus connection using a Gateway GW
4), the Direct para. must be set to "NO"!
Direct parameterization is switched to “NO” by the GCP-30 for safety
reasons once the firing speed has been reached. That means that
further setting by a external computer using the Parameterization
plug is not possible. Changing of the unit parameters is only possible
using the display buttons directly, or via the CAN bus interface. The
deactivation of the direct parameterization is for safety reasons, so
that in the case of multiple systems starting simultaneously (e. g.
Emergency power situation) a simultaneous closing of breakers the
black busbar is prevented.

holding circuit external to the GCP. The reply
of the generator power circuit breaker is used to
detect the closed contacts.
In both cases, the relay "Command: Open GCB" remains
unchanged.

The Digital Input function allows for Normally Open or Normally closed logic
from external fault inputs. The GCP-30 internal signal is always a Logic “1”
when fault occurs. Therefore the input must be set to match the external logic
function.
Normally Open (D) ......... The fault activated relay (Fig. 6-2) picks up when the
associated fault trips (becomes active), i.e., in the
fault operating state, current flows through the coil
and the operating current contact will apply voltage
to the GCP-30 input. (voltage between input and
Common. The fault relay is de-energized in normal
operation, so there will be no change in the state of
the relay in the event of a power outage and the
input will not trip. In this case, the relay's readiness
for operation should be monitored externally.
Normally Closed (E)........ The fault activated relay (Fig 6-3) drops out when the
fault is tripped, i.e., in the normal running (idle)
state, current flows through the coil and the relay is
pulled in. On a fault or loss of power to the device,
the relay will de-energize and there will be a change
in the state of the relay. The digital input will have
voltage removed from the input.
For Figure 6-2 an 6-3 the Operating Current Contact is connected to the digital
input terminal for positive logic, or the common terminal (33 or 60) for negative
input logic.

Commissioning
WARNING—HIGH VOLTAGE
When commissioning the unit, please observe the five safety rules that
apply to the handling of live equipment. Make sure that you know how to
provide first aid in current-related accidents and that you know where the
first aid kit and the nearest telephone are. Never touch any live components
of the system or on the back of the system:
LIFE THREATENING
WARNING
The unit may only be commissioned by a qualified technician. The
"EMERGENCY -SHUTOFF function must function safely before the
commissioning and must not depend on the particular machine
CAUTION
Prior to commissioning, check that all measuring voltages are correctly
connected with regard to phases. The connect commands for the power
circuit breakers must be disconnected at the power circuit breakers.
The rotating field must be measured. Any lack or incorrect connection of
measuring voltages or other signals may lead to incorrect functions and
damage the unit as well as engines and components connected to the unit.
Procedure:
1. After checking to ensure that all measuring voltages have been connected
to the correct phases, the supply voltage.
code number, all parameters are first set. (See the Chapter regarding
input screens).
3. Following the application of the supply voltage, please check that all
measuring values (voltages, currents, wattages, power circuit breaker
analog input replies) are correctly displayed. The unit must only be
started if the power circuit breaker replies are correct.
4. First start the drive unit via the "MANUAL" operating mode (press the
22 "MANUAL" button) ( 23 "START") and then stop it ( 24 "STOP"). All
5. Check the automatic start procedure via the "TEST" operating mode

Remote control via Gateway GW 4 (receiving telegram)
Procedure When the transmitter is ready for data transmission, it notifies the receiver of this by
switching its control line RTS to "ON". The prerequisite of this is that no data are
received (CTS = "OFF"). The receiver registers this status and indicates its readiness
to receive by switching its RTS line to "ON". The transmitter can then begin
transmitting when it detects this "ON" status on its CTS line. As soon as the receiver
withdraws its RTS signal (RTS = "OFF"), the transmitter interrupts its transmission
and waits until the receiver is ready to receive again. The initialization conflict (both
subscribers set the RTS line simultaneously) and time-out (one subscriber waits in
vain for a reply) must be taken into consideration.
The current direction can be recognized via the code word prefix. A positive transmitted value
indicates supply (power output), a negative transmitted value indicates power consumption
(incoming supply).
The following power values may be preset: fixed power (F power), outgoing power (L power)
and incoming power (B power). The active power setpoint is transmitted in binary form using
bits 0-13. The control argument must be transmitted in the basis of bits 14 and 15. In this case,
the following coding applies:
Examples:
F power of 150 kW is to be compensated.
The value transmitted is then:
01/00 0000 1001 0110 B Î 4096 H
