Modeling and Simulation of Discrete Event Systems

The document introduces simulation as a way to imitate the operations of a facility or process using a computer model. For complex systems, simulation is needed to numerically evaluate the model and collect data to understand its characteristics. Simulation allows studying how changes impact a system's internal interactions. It can be used to experiment with new designs before implementing them and to determine important variables. Animation can visualize an operational plan. Simulation should not be used when problems can be solved simply, analytically, or through direct experiments, or if costs outweigh benefits. Applications of simulation include manufacturing, construction, the military, logistics, transportation, business processes, healthcare, and risk analysis.

Modeling and Simulation of Discrete Event Systems

Introduction to Simulation

1
Introduction to Simulation
• Simulation: Imitate the operations of a facility or process,
usually via computer
– Facility or process of interest, that is to be simulated is
the system
– To study system, often assumptions/approximations,
both logical and mathematical, are made and
hence model is formed
– Model is solved by mathematical methods to get
solution (in terms of measures of performance)
2
• If model structure is simple enough, could use
mathematical methods to get exact information on
questions of interest — analytical solution

• Most complex systems require models that are also

complex, they must be studied via simulation —
evaluate model numerically and collect data to
estimate model characteristics

3
What simulation does and when to use
• Enables study of internal interactions of a complex
system

• Informational, organizational and environmental

changes can be simulated and the effect of those on
the model behavior can be observed

• The knowledge gained in designing a simulation model

can suggest improvement in the system

4
• insight may be obtained as to which variables are most
important and how variables interact.

• can be used to experiment with new designs or

policies prior to implementation, can be used to verify
analytic solutions.

• By simulating different capabilities for a machine,

requirements can be determined.

• Animation shows a system in simulated operation so that

the plan can be visualized.

5
When simulation should not be used
• when the problem can be solved using common sense.
• if the problem can be solved analytically.
• if it is easier to perform direct experiments.
• if the costs exceeds savings.
• if the resources or time are not available.
• If no data is available
• If there is not enough time or the person are not
available
• If managers have unreasonable expectation
• If system behavior is too complex to be defined
6
Application of simulation
• Manufacturing
• Construction engineering
• Military applications
• Logistics, supply chain and distribution application
• Transportation
• Business process simulation
• Health care
• Risk analysis (insurance, options pricing etc.)
• Call center analysis
