Sunidhi Rathore: Building Construction-V

The document discusses different types of formwork used in building construction. It describes formwork as molds used to shape wet concrete until it hardens. The main types discussed are timber, steel, plastic, and aluminum formwork. Each type is examined in terms of its features, advantages, and disadvantages for use in construction projects. Maintenance requirements and cost factors of formwork are also outlined.

WHAT IS FORMWORK ?

• Formwork is a mould including all supporting structures, used to shape and support concrete
until it attains sufficient strength to carry its own weight.
• When the concrete is set ,the formwork is removed and a solid mass is produced in the shape
of innerface of formwork.
• It should be capable of carrying all imposed dead and live loads apart from its own weight .
• Major objectives considered in formwork-
I. Quality
II. Safety
III. Economy
FEATURES OF A GOOD FORMWORK-

 Materials should be cheap and reusable.

 Surface should be smooth ,and afford easy stripping.
 Light in weight ,so thats easy to transfer.
 It should be practically water proof , so that it should not absorb water from concrete.
 Swelling and shrinkage should be minimum.
 The material of formwork should not wrap or get distorted when exposed to the
elements.
 Deflection should be minimum.
 The joints in the formfork should be tight against leakage of cement grout.
CATEGORIES OF FORMFORK

• Conventional formwork
a) Timber
b) Moisture resistant particle board
• Modern day formwork
a) Table form / flying formwork
b) System column formwork
c) Slip formwork
d) Tunnel formwork
• Engineered / pre-fabricated formwork
a) Steel
b) aluminium
PROCESSING STAGES OF FORMWORK

• Assembly and erection

• Concrete placement

• Strippling and dismantling.

TYPES OF FORMWORK- II

• Form work is commonly made of –

IV
I. TIMBER
II. STEEL
III
III. PLASTIC
IV. ALUMINIUM
TIMBER FORMWORK

• Most common material used for bracing the

member, hence called as the traditional
formwork.
• Can easily be cut to size on site
ADVANTAGES OF TIMBER FORMWORK

• Easy handling because its light weight.

• Easy to diasassemble.
• Damaged parts can be replaced with new one.s
• Reduced site labour.
• It has good thermal insulation which makes it useful to be used in colder regions.
• It can be built to exceed 60 year design life.
DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER FORMFORK

• It can’t be used for long ,have limited reuse.

• Timber with high moisture content (more than 20% of moisture content),wet concrete
will shrink & cup leading to open joints and leakage of grout.
• If timber is dry ,it will absorb moisture from wet concrete which can later weaken
the resultant concrete member.
STEEL FORMWORK

• steel forms can be installed and dismantled

with greater ease and speed.
• Steel forms are stronger, durable and have
longer life than timber formwork and their
reuses are more in number.
ADVANTAGES OF STEEL FORMFORK

• Easy to be fixed.
• No shrinkage of formwork occurs.
• Very strong and able to carry loads.
• Can be used for more number of times.
• More durable than timber formwork.
• Its non absorbent.
• Smooth finish surface obtained.
DISADVANTAGES OF STEEL FORM WORK

• Excessive loss of heat.

• More expensive than wood.
• Due to high weight of steel handling is difficult.
• Limited size and shape.
PLASTIC FORMWORK

• The plastic formwork system is a method of building cast in

place reinforced concrete structures.
• In which the walls ,columns etc of a house can be built in as a
day by unskilled laborers with locally sourced materials and
little waste.
ADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC FORMWORK

• Reusable.
• Chemical resistant.
• Fungus and termites resistant.
• Light weight.
• Can be easily cut and nail by using wood
working.
• Very useful for complex shaped and special
features.
• Damages and stains on the formwork can be
easily removed.
DISADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC FORMWORK

• Load carrying capacity is low.

• Expensive at first.
• Damaged by excessive heat ,can be craked.
ALUMINIUM FORMWORK

• Aluminium is strong and light , and

consequently fewer , supports and ties
are required.
• This system is very unique as all the
components in a building, including slabs,
beams , window hood are of concrete
and there is no need for block works or
brick works.
ADVANTAGES OF ALUMINIUM FORMWORK

• It doesn’t require timber or plywood for construction activities.

• Casting of walls and slabs is possible simultaneously.
• It is very cost effective for repetitive building layouts.
• Suitable for constructing large number of houses in a short span of
time using room size forms to construct walls and slabs in one
continous pour on concrete.
• Doesn’t required skilled labour.
• Doesn’t require timber or plywood for construction activites
DISADVANTAGES OF ALUMINIUM FORMWORK

• Due to the tremendous speed of construction , working capital finance needs to the
planned in advance.
• Architectural changes are not possible on the structure.
MAINTENANCE OF FORMWORK

• Due to continous use, wooden planks and steel plates surfaces

become uneven and require further maintenance.

• For wooden formwork use cardboard or plastic fiber board. Bolt

hole places must be repaired.

• For steel formwork plates must be leveled by mallet and loose

corners must be welded.
COST OF FORMWORK

• For normal works cost of formwork is about 30%-40% of the

concrete cost.
• For special works cost of formwork is about 50%-60% of the
concrete cost.
• Formwork cost is controlled by following factors-
i. Formwork material cost
ii. Formwork erecting cost
iii. Formwork removal cost
iv. Formwork jointing cost (nails and cables)
v. Labour charges.
