ALPHABET ICE CREAM
How to use
- Represent every new letter with tasty ice cream and teach the appropriate
vocabulary;
- Use the ice cones and scoops for playing any flashcard games:

What's missing? Put a number of flashcards (6-8) on the table (or floor) face-up in order all
the players could see them properly. Students look at the cards trying to memorize as many
as possible. Ask them to close their eyes and remove one (or more cards). Ask: what's
missing? They must name the missing card. The student who does it first, gets a point or
has a go to take away another card. To make the game more effective, and reduce teacher
talking time, divide the students into groups and give them cards with vocabulary you want
them to learn or revise.

Memory game. Print two sets of unsigned scoops or cones. Put all cards face down on the
floor (or table), determine the order of the players in the game. Children take turns to open
two cards and name them. If they match, the player keeps the cards and has another go(if
you play with cones, he can choose the scoops for his ice creams), if they don't the cards
are turned over again and another child goes.

Kim's game. Choose several cards, children look at them very attentively and try to
memorize. Then the cards are covered with a towel and they have to name as many cards
as possible.

Tic Tac Toe. Draw a grid 3*3 on the board, stick one card in every square. To put a cross or
a nought a player must say the correct word on that card or make a short sentence. (e.g. I
have got a frog. etc.)

Fortress. Draw a fortress on the board. Tell children that it is attacked by enemies, add a
ladder to the wall without some steps (5-7). The goal is to defend the fortress. Show the
cards, children must say the correct words. 1 mistake – add 1 missing step on the ladder. If
they are mistaken less than the number of missing steps, the fortress is saved!
Read my lips. The teacher silently mouths the word a few times. The student who first tells the
word that has been said can have a turn or gets a point.

In a flash. Keep a set of cards with a back side to players in order they can't see the pictures or
words on them. Then turn the cards over and back very quickly. Children have to see the picture
and name it. That one to do it first gets the card. The winner is the player with the most cards.
Variation: If there are many children in the class, divide them into groups and deal the same
number of cards between the groups. Children play in groups (one person shows the card quickly,
others try to see and guess a word). After all cards have been played, the groups change the sets
and play with new cards.

Touch. Place flashcards around the room and ask students to run around the classroom touching
the flashcards that you say.
ALPHABET ICE CREAM
Race Track. Lay out the flashcards like a race track with a start and finish line on the table (or on
the floor). Students play in pairs, teams or individually. Determine the order of players in the
game. The first student rolls a dice and moves a counter along the track. Then s/he must say a
sentence using the word on the flashcard he's landed on and if it's wrong, must move one step
back. The first to reach finish is the winner.

Charades. The student gets a card, he starts acting it out without saying a word. The first player to
guess the word correctly becomes the next leader. Variation: divide the class up into teams - the
first student to guess, wins a point for his/her team.

Goal! Put flashcards on the floor (or table) where all pupils can see them. Ask each student in a
turn to throw a coin or a ball onto one of the cards. If the coin/ball lands on a flashcard, they must
name the card, make a phrase or a sentence using the target vocabulary.

Have a race. It's better to play outside dividing students into teams. Put the flashcards on one side
of the playground. Players are standing on the other side. The teacher says a word, the first
representatives of every team run to the cards. The first to bring the correct card, wins a point for
his/her team. The team with the most cards is the winner.

Describe and guess. A student gets a card and starts to describe it without showing to other
participants of the game. (e.g. It's a small green animal, it can jump.) Others try to guess the word,
asking questions: Is it a frog? Yes, it is.

Who's first? (great for playing in teams or in pairs). The teacher shows the cards one by one. The
team to name the word first gets a card or a point. The team with the most points is the winner.

Bit by bit. The teacher shows the card revealing the picture on it part by part. Players try to guess
what it is. The first to guess it gets a card. The player with the most cards is the winner.

Mousehole. Take a cardboard sheet, cut out a little hole in it. It is considered to be a mousehole.
Hide a necessary card behind it, players will see only a little part of the card. They must guess
what it is and say the correct word.

- If you want your students to revise the alphabet, do the following activities:

Matching. Shuffle the scoops and put them on the floor (or table), let kids choose the same
number of cones without looking at the letters beforehand. Then set the time limit and have them
find all necessary scoops. Variation: deal the cones between the kids and shuffle the unsigned
scoops, ask them to find the matching scoops according to their cones;

Hunting. Kids love it! Hide the scoops around the classroom or outside at the playground, or just
stick them on the walls. Give out the cones, make children find and bring the correct scoops. You
may have a race too. The first team to pick up all their ice creams is the winner.
Variation: Give children the scoops with different beginning letters and have them find required
cones for every scoop. To make it more difficult deal out the unsigned scoops;

Warm-up activity. Choose a letter (or more 3-4), show a cone, make kids say the sound and then
name all words they know which you learnt last lesson on the scoops;
ALPHABET ICE CREAM
Auction sales game. Choose some letters you want to revise. Use a squeaking toy hammer for the
entourage. Tell kids that they are buyers and you are going to sell some letters. To buy a letter
they must say any words which start with the traded letter. The words can't be repeated. The last
person to say the word, buys the lot, gets the ice cream cone and has to make an ice cream filling
the cone with the appropriate scoops (signed or unsigned). Let's see who is Scrooge McDuck));

Rabbit game. Great for small groups. If the group is big, you'd better play this active game outside
or in the classroom if it's spacious enough, 3 players minimum. Choose a letter, show its cone to
kids, repeat the sound together. Then play. 2 players stand opposite each other at the distance of
3-4 meters. Player 3 stands in the center between them, s/he is a Rabbit. The players throw the
ball over the Rabbit's head to each other saying the words beginning with the necessary letter.
The words can't be repeated. The Rabbit must catch the ball. If s/he catches the ball, the player
who threw it, becomes the Rabbit (or if the player who throws the ball, repeats the word that has
already been said). Then choose another letter and play again with a new Rabbit.

Order the alphabet. Give students an alphabet cone (with all letters), ask them to make a mega
ice cream ordering the unsigned scoops correctly. You may print several sets and play this activity
in teams. The first team to do it properly is the winner.

I have who has. Put an alphabet cone in a center, deal the unsigned scoops (or signed scoops
one for each letter) between the children randomly. The player with A word scoop puts it on the
cone, saying I have A (and says a letter/a sound/a word on the scoop), who has B? Players look in
their cards and the process is repeated until the mega ice cream is ready.

- You can use ice cream alphabet for craft as well.

Print the necessary number of letters for every child. Let children cut out cones and scoops and
paste them in their copybooks. It will also develop motor skills. Kids will enjoy the process. They
can be the letters that you study in the lesson or the first letters of their names.
