Assessment 1

This document contains 5 problems related to nozzle flow and steam expansion: 1) Determining the maximum discharge and nozzle exit area for dry saturated steam expanding through a convergent-divergent nozzle. 2) Calculating the number of nozzles needed and exit area for steam discharging through nozzles to develop 220kw of power. 3) Finding dimensions, undercooling, supersaturation, irreversibility, and flow ratio for steam supplying nozzles. 4) Determining throat and exit areas and undercooling for supersaturated expansion in a nozzle. 5) Calculating throat and exit heights for a Delaval nozzle discharging a perfect gas.

1. Dry saturated steam at 3.

5bar is supplied to a convergent divergent nozzle whose that area is

4.4 cm2.the exit pressure is 1.1bar.determine maximum possible discharge through
nozzle/minute and area of the nozzle at exit when the flow is maximum assume the flow is
frictionless adiabatic.
2. Steam at a pressure of 15bar saturated is discharged through a convergent divergent nozzle to a
back pressure of 0.2 bar .the mass flow rate 9kg/kwhr. if the power developed is 220kw
determine number of nozzles required .if each nozzle has a throat of rectangular cross section of
4mm x 8mm .if 12% of overall isentropic enthalpy drop occurs in the divergent portion due to
friction. find the cross section of the exit rectangle
3. In an installation 5.2kg/s of steam 30bar and 350C is supplied to group of six nozzles in a wheel
diameter maintain at 4 bar determine
i) Dimensions of the nozzles of rectangular cross section flow area with aspect ratio 3:1 the
expression may be considered metastable
ii) Degree of undercooling & super saturation
iii) Loss in available heat drop due to irreversibility
iv) Increase in entropy
v) Ratio of mass flow rate
4. Supersaturated expansion occurs in a nozzle supplied with steam at 2MN/m2 and 3250C.The law
for the expansion may be taken as pV1.3= constant upto the exit pressure of 0.36 MN/m2 for a
flow rate of 450kg/min. determine (i) Throat and the exit area and (ii) Degree of undercooling at
the exit
5. Determine the throat and exit height of Delaval nozzle of discharge 27kg of a perfect gas/min.
The inlet and exit pressure are 480kpa and 138kpa respectively. Initial temperature of the gas is
535C nozzle efficiency is 90% friction lasses occur only after the throat .the molecular weight of
the gas is 29 and its adiabatic index=1.4 assume square cross section of the nozzle
