Compose Your Own 12-Bar Blues

Students will complete a 12-bar blues composition project in two parts using Noteflight and Soundtrap. In Noteflight, students will write their own blues melody in the top line using Roman numerals to label chords. They will then import the file into Soundtrap, change the piano to another instrument, add drum loops or other instruments, and record themselves playing or improvising over the composition. The finished recording should be downloaded and submitted.

Compose your own 12-bar blues

Mr. Sharrock

Students will complete their Unit 2 project using Noteflight, Soundtrap and their knowledge of 12-bar blues form.
---
Part 1: Noteflight/Blues form
1. Change the instrument name to your instrument.
2. Write your name in the Lyricist spot.
3. Label all chords with Roman Numerals (i, iv, or V)
4. Compose your own blues melody in the top line. DO NOT edit the piano part at this time.
5. When you are happy with your melody, save this file and share it with all site members.
---
Part 2: Soundtrap
1. Import this file into sound trap as a MIDI file.
2. Change the piano tracks to an alternate, melodic instrument. At this point if you would like to edit the pitch of the piano, you
may do so, but it must be a recognizable blues form when complete!
3. Add in at least one drum loop, and anything else you would like!
4. When completed and you are satisfied with your recording, download as an MP3 file and submit to google classroom.
---
BONUS!
1. If you want an extra challenge, mute the melody in soundtrap and record yourself, either playing your melody, or improvise
your own! Post this to the discussion board on google classroom.
