What I Need to Know?

Functions describe relationships. They are useful in determining the relationships between two groups that belong to two
different sets. They dictate what to do with the value of the independent variable to be able to produce the value of the
dependent variable. There are times that a single function is enough to produce outputs but there are also times where more
than a single function is used to produce an output.

Functions
Definition
A function is a rule of correspondence between two nonempty sets, such that to each element of the
first set called the domain, there corresponds one and only one element of the second set called that range.
Each element in the domain is related to only one value in the range by some rule.
Functions can be denoted by any letter of the English alphabet or Greek character. Subscripted letters may also be used
in some cases where different functions are used in the same problem e.g. f 1(x), f2(x)…

If f is a function and x is an element in its domain, then, to each element x, the function f associates exactly one value
to be denoted by f(x), read as “f of x”.

y= f(x)
Functions in Real-Life
The real-life situations that can by represented by functions show that the quantity is related, depends on, corresponds
to, or maps onto another quantity. There are three elements for each situation: input, rule, output.

The set of inputs is the domain, which serves as the entry to the function, and the set of outputs is called the range.

DOMAIN → FUNCTION RULE → RANGE

The function maps its domain onto its range.
INPUT → FUNCTION RULE → OUTPUT

If f is a function and x is an element in its domain, then, to each element x, the function f associates exactly one value
to be denoted by f(x), read as “f of x”.
y= f(x)
Piecewise Functions

A piecewise function is a function described by more than one formula. The function depends on the value of the input
or the independent variable.

What’s in?
Learners answer an activity to discover the process on performing operations on funtions..

What is it?

Example 1: Give a function C that can represent the cost of buying x student meals from the school canteen, if one meal costs
25 pesos.

C ( x )=25 x

Input Function Rule Output

x number of meals C ( x )=25 x total cost C ( x )

Example 2: Given
50 x , if ∧x ≥ 60
{
f ( x )= 45 x ,if ∧40 ≤ x <60
40 x , if ∧x< 40

a. x=70

Since 70 falls within the condition if x ≥ 60, use f ( x )=50 x .

f ( x )=50 x
f ( 70 )=50 ( 70 )
f ( 70 )=3500
b. x=35

Since 35 falls within the condition if x <40 , use f ( x )=40 x.

f ( x )=40 x
f ( 35 )=40 ( 35 )
f ( 35 )=1400

c. x=50

Since 50 falls within the condition if 40 ≤ x< 60, use f ( x )=45 x.

f ( x )=45 x
f ( 50 )=45 ( 50 )
f ( 50 )=2250

What if x=10? x=40? x=60?

What’s more?

Write the function that represents the real-life situations below:

1. Taxes are crucial to fund various government expenses. One of the most familiar forms of tax is the Value-added tax or VAT,
which is a form of sales tax. On sale of goods and properties, the VAT rate is twelve percent of the total selling price or
value. Imagine buying some stuff like cosmetic products or shoes in a mall. How would you compute for the VAT V on your
total expenses e? Represent it using a function.
2. What function represents the circumference C of a circular classroom clock given

a. its radius r

b. its diameter d

What can I do?

Activity:

1. Your parents have budgeted you 1000 pesos a month for your allowance and 250 pesos especially for your extra expenses
such as mobile load. What is the function of the expected budget B for you given m number of months?

2. One of the platforms of Mathletes Club to raise funds for the Math Week’s culminating activity is to sell club shirts. With the
desire to receive more orders from each class, they offer discounts to those who will order x number of t-shirts. If a section
orders less than 20 shirts, each shirt will cost 280 pesos each. If there are 20 or more orders but less than 40, each will cost
270 pesos each. If there are 40 orders or more, each will only cost 250 pesos. Represent the total payment P of each class
with x orders.

What other enrichment activities can I engage in? (Additional Activities)

1. Give one real-life situation that can be represented and solved by a function. Write the function and the solution.

2. Give one word problem that can be solved by a piece-wise function. Write the piece-wise function and the solution. Give
examples for each function

D. Assimilation
What I have learned?

A function is a rule of correspondence between two nonempty sets, such that to each element of the first set called the domain,
there corresponds one and only one element of the second set called that range.

The real-life situations that can by represented by functions show that the quantity is related, depends on, corresponds to, or
maps onto another quantity.
INPUT → FUNCTION RULE → OUTPUT

A piecewise function is a function described by more than one formula.

What I can do (Assessment)?

Write the piecewise function that represents the real-life situations below:

1. A local bookstore charges Php200 per ream of long bond papers for orders of less than 50, Php185 per ream for orders of
50 reams or more but fewer than 75, and Php160 per ream for orders of 75 reams or more. Which function best represents
the total cost C if you are to buy x reams of long bond paper?

2. A network offers an affordable promo especially made for its subscribers who are students. For this particular mobile plan, a
user is charged of ₱70 weekly, which include 1G data, another 2G data for video-watching and streaming on some particular
sites and 150 texts to all networks. Messages in excess of 150 are charged ₱1.50 each. Represent the amount a consumer
pays each week as a function of the promo and the number of messages m sent in a week.

3. A jeep ride costs ₱9.00 for the first 4 kilometers. For each additional integer kilometer,₱1.50 is added to the fare. Use a
piecewise function to represent the jeepney fare in terms of the distance d in kilometers.

Since a commuter can travel a distance that is not an integer, for example 6.8 km, we need to get the greatest integer of the
distance travelled first before using it in the function. The greatest integer of d is the largest integer less than or equal to the
given value d. This is denoted by ⌊ d ⌋ . For example, what is ⌊ 6.8 ⌋ ? The greatest integer is 6since 6 is the greatest integer
less than 6.8.

4. The Pera Padala rates of Palawan Express.

V. Reflection
The learners, in their respective notebook, journal, or portfolio write their personal insights about the lesson learned by
completing the phrases.
