Competency: Use literary devices and techniques to craft a story summary

I. Learning Objectives:
After a series of activities, Grade 9 students are able to:
 display understanding and mastery of the three literary devices
(foreshadowing, flashback, in media res) by describing them and knowing
their importance in literature;
 create a story summary by using any of the three literary devices
(foreshadowing, flashback, in media res); and
 defend one’s choice in identifying what literary device is present in the story
behind Padul-ong Festival

II. Subject Matter:


Topic: Foreshadowing, Flashback, In Media Res
Reference: Anglo-American Literature Learner’s Material Grade 9, quarter 3
pages 219-225, www.google.com, www.youtube.com
Materials: Learner’s material, meta cards, laptop speaker, and visual aids

III. Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities:
A.1. Greetings
A.2. Arranging of chairs
A.3. Reviewing of the the past lesson
3.1.The teachers shows a video clip on kindness. Students are to give
comments.
3.2 Let them recall literary devices discussed last two grading periods.

B. Motivation:
Let the students watch three different video clips taken from movies. Ask
them their reactions.

C. Presentation/Discussion:
Let them watch the video clips again. With a partner, let them
list/brainstorm what literary devices are present. Tell students that this
morning they will be learning three new literary devices: foreshadowing,
flashback, and in media res. Discuss each. Give examples.

D. Analysis:
Going back to the video clips again, with a partner, let them identify which
video clip shows foreshadowing, flashback, and in media res. Let them
explain/describe their choice.

E. Abstraction:
Identify the literary devices discussed today. Describe each. Why are these
literary devices important in literature?

F. Application:
Students are grouped into three. Going back to the story, Thank you, Ma’am”
by Langston Hughes, write a summary using the literary devices discussed.
(Remind students how to write a story summary by giving them the
guidelines in writing it.)

Content/use of literary device – 10
Conventions in writing a story summary – 10

Total 20 points

IV. Evaluation:
Read the summary of the Padul-ong story. Identify what literary device/s is/are
present. Defend your answer based on the descriptions of foreshadowing,
flashback, and in media res.
Rubric:
Explanation/correctness of answer – 10 points

V. Assignment:
Search from youtube a movie clip. In a ½ crooswise paper, in three to four
paragraphs, write the literary device used (foreshadowing, flashback, in media
res) and its explanation.
