Lab Session No.01 Objective: Apparatus: Diagram:: Hydraulic Bench

The document describes how to determine the volume flow rate using a hydraulic bench apparatus. The apparatus includes a hydraulic bench with a sump tank, centrifugal pump, control valve, measuring cylinder, and other parts. The procedure involves filling the sump tank, running the pump for a set time, measuring the starting and final volumes in the cylinder, and calculating the flow rate based on the change in volume over time. The student performs the experiment multiple times and calculates the average flow rate.

Lab Session No.

01
Objective:
To determine the volume flow rate by using Hydraulic Bench apparatus.
Apparatus:
Hydraulic Bench and Stop Watch.
Diagram:

Theory:
Hydraulic Bench:
It is basically a volumetric type which has been designed to provide continuous and
controlled supply of water to conduct various experiments in fluid or hydraulic lab.
Parts of Hydraulic Bench:
 Centrifugal pump
 Sump tank
 Vertical pipes
 Control valve
 Mouth piece / Male and female connector
 Top open Channel
 Side Channel
 Dump valve
 Actuator
 Over flow valve
 Stilling baffle
 Site level tube with scale
 Drain valve
 Measuring Cylinder
Explanation of parts of Hydraulic Bench Apparatus:
SUMP TANK
The fluid used in hydraulic bench is stored in sump tank located at the bottom of
hydraulic bench. The water from the sump tank is supplied through pump. Sump tank has
the capacity of 160 liters.
VERTICAL PIPE
Water from the sump tank is supplied to the upper portion of bench through vertical
transparent pipe using a pimp.
CONTROL VALVE
It is used to regulate the flow in the pipe i.e. to increase or decrease the inflow of water in
hydraulic bench.

CONNECTOR
The connector allows flow for rapid substitution of accessories special purpose
terminations may be connected to the pump supply by screwing connector.
CHANNEL
It is used in number of experiments .it provides passage in water for different
experiments.
DRAIN VALVE
Drain valve is used for discharging of water form sump tank.
SIDE CHANNELS
Side channels are provided to support the accessory on test.
VOLUMETRIC TANK
Water discharging form the accessory (channels) on test is collected in a volumetric
measuring tank. This tank is stepped to accommodate low or high flow rates.
STILLING BAFFLE
Volumetric measuring tank incorporates a stilling baffle inclined to reduce turbulence.
SCALE AND TAPPING
A sight tube and scale is connected to tapping in the base of the volumetric tank and glass
an instantaneous indication of water flow.
DUMP VALVE
Dump valve is in the base of the volumetric tank opening the dump valve allows the
entrained water to return to the sump tank to recycling.
ACTUATOR
Dump valve is operated by a remote actuator lifting actuator opens the damp valve. When
lifted and twisted through 90*.the actuator will retain the dump valve in the open
position.
OVERFLOW
An over flow adjacent to the sump returns the water to the sump tank in the event of
incorrect use of.
MEASURING CYLINDER.
A measuring cylinder is provided to measuring a very small flow rater the cylinder is
stored in the compartment house e.g. the sump.
STARTER
Electrical supply to the pump motor is via a starter.
Pump:
It is a device that moves the fluids (Liquids and gases) by mechanical action.
Types of Pump:
Centrifugal Pump:
This pump uses the kinetic energy of its impeller such that it continuously supplies fluid.
Reciprocating Pump:
A reciprocating pump is one in which the liquid follows the movement of a piston during
suction and delivery strokes.
Specifications of Hydraulic Bench
 Hydraulic Bench is made of polyester rain forced with fiber glass.
 Sump tank capacity is 160 liters, small channel has capacity of 10 liters.
 Centrifugal pump is of 370 watts, its flow rate is 30-80 liters/min. It can deliver water
or fluid to the height of 12m up to 20m.
 Runner is made of stainless steel.
 The volumetric tank is calibrated from 0 to 10liters for measuring low flow, Big tank
calibrated 0 to 40 liters measures high flow.
 Quick and easy change of different accessories.
 Flow rate = Final Level(m3) - Starting level(m3)
Time(sec)

Procedure:
 First of all, I filled the sump tank with water.
 I connected the mouthpiece. So, that the water may not flow upwards.
 Then, I closed the dump valve to stop the water flowing to storage tank.
 Then, I switched the Centrifugal Pump ON and started the stop watch at the same
time.
 After a while, I off the Centrifugal Pump and at the same time stopped the stop watch.
 Then, I noted the starting and final volume from the measuring cylinder.
 I note the time from the stop watch.
 Then, I repeated the experiment four times more.
 At the end, I calculated the registered or final volume and divide it with time, which
gave Flow rate.
Observations & Calculations:

Comments:

If there is any error then Errors should be removed or zero correction , so that
more accurate and precise readings can be obtained. Flow rate will be more as
the more fluid volume flows in the time interval.
