Lab Session No.02 Objective: Apparatus

This document describes a lab session to calculate the hydrostatic force and center of pressure on a partially submerged body. The lab uses a hydrostatic pressure apparatus containing a water tank, weights, and a scale to measure the force. Students vary the mass applied to a submerged quadrant and measure the resulting head height and center of pressure using the formula COP=h/3. Observations show that as applied weight increases, head height and hydrostatic force increase, shifting the center of pressure higher.

LAB SESSION No.

02
Objective:
Calculate the Hydrostatic Force and Centre of Pressure of the partially submerged
body.
Apparatus:
 Hydrostatic Pressure Apparatus
 Hydraulic bench
 Hangers
 Weights
Diagram:

Hydrostatic Pressure Apparatus

Parts of the apparatus:
 Counter weights
 Scale
 Pan with weights
 Water tank
 Adjustable legs
 Drain valve
Specifications of the apparatus:
 Capacity of the tank = 5.5 L
 Distance between the suspended weights and support points = 285mm
 Area of section = 0.007m2
 Total depth of the submerged quadrant = 160mm
 Height of the support point at the quadrant = 100mm
 Set of weights 5,10,20,50 and 100g
Theory:

Center of Pressure (COP):

The point of application of resultant pressure is called the center of pressure.
For finding the center of pressure we use the following formula.
h= IG/A*x +x
 Mostly C and G are same in case of Horizontal
shape. As in this case pressure distributes equally.
 In case of vertical position C is always lower than G.
Intensity is increases as the depth is increase.

Momentum (in partially immersion):
The momentum in partially immersion is given as,
F.L=1/2.γ.b.h2(a+d- h/3)
Where, γ is specific weight of water and is equal to 1000Kg/cm3, L is he distance b/w the
pivot point and weight, a is distance b/w pivot point and flat surface, d is height of flat
surface, b is width of flat surface, h is height of water respects to bases.
Hydrostatic force act on the quadrant when it is immersed in the water and force act on
rectangular face and give it thrust to rise up.
Procedure:
 First of all I filled the water in the hydrostatic pressure apparatus until it push
the object upward.
 After thatt balanced the pan by moving the counter weight
 Then I adjusted the body to sink in water and noted the value of ‘h’
 And found the centre of pressure.
 Similarly, I repeated the same procedure to get more readings.
Observation & Calculation:
Centre of pressure (C.O.P) =h/3, L=285mm, a=100mm, d=100mm, b=70mm

Partially Sub-merged:

Comments:
As the observations and calculations show that as the applied weight
is enhanced the head is also increased which results increment in the
hydrostatic force and ultimately center of pressure. However results
will be right if the two opposite acting torques are equal which I got
with the help of this apparatus.
