Anil was seven. He was able to read well, but he would not read. His
mother was worried. Most of Anil’s friends had developed a reading
habit. They would read story books and comics.
Mother bought story books for Anil. Mother knew that Anil was a bright
boy. He was curious too. He would spend hours watching a bird build a
nest or an insect crawl by. Then he would draw pictures in his drawing
book. “If only this boy would read books!” thought mother.
One day mother bought a present for Anil. It was quite heavy. Anil sat on
a chair to open it. He opened the wrapper and saw what was inside. He
was about to keep the present down and run away. Can you guess why?
Mother had bought him a book!
Anil was about to run away but he did not. Something on the book’s
cover made him stop. It was the picture of a spider making a web. There
were pictures of fish and birds, too.
