I.OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to;


a. Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
b. Use appropriate context clues in unlocking the meaning
of unfamiliar words or expressions.
c. Recognize the importance of noting context clues in
determining the meaning of words and expressions.

A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of African


literature as a means of exploring forces that human beings
contend with; various reading style vis- a vis purposes of
reading; prosodic features that serve as carriers of meaning;
ways by which information may be organized, related, and
delivered orally; and parallel structures and cohesive
devises in presenting information.

B. Performance Standards The learner transfers learning by composing and delivering


an informative speech based on a specific topic of interest
keeping in mind the proper and effective use of parallel
structures and cohesive devices and appropriate prosodic
features, stance and behavior.

C. Most Essential Learning Determine the meaning of words and expressions that
Competencies (MELC) reflect the local culture by noting context clues.
D. Enabling Competencies 1. Explain how the elements specific to a genre contribute
to the theme of a particular literary selection.
2. Use context clues from the material viewed to determine
the meaning of unfamiliar words or expressions.

IV.PROCEDURES
A. Introduction  The teacher will provide the content of the lesson.
(2 DAYS)  The teacher will also share the objectives of the
lesson.
 The learners will provide what they know about
Africa using a semantic web.
 The learners will read “The Hands of Blacks,” an
excerpt from “We killed Mangy-dog.”
 After reading the selection, they will
answer the questions provided at the end of the
selection.
B. Development  The learners will be asked to read the story again
(2 DAYS) and look for 15 unfamiliar/difficult words.
 They need to find a way to learn the meaning of
each unfamiliar/difficult word.
 They will use the given table on the worksheet to
summarize their work.
 The learners will read the lecture about Context
Clues.
C. Engagement  After reading, they will answer the different
(2 DAYS) activities in using context clues in determining the
meaning of an unfamiliar/difficult word.
 The learners will share their personal reflection on
the importance of using context clues in
determining the meaning of unfamiliar/difficult
word.
D. Assimilation 
