Example 1 Level 1
The graph in the figure shows the linear relation between x and log y. The graph
passes through (3 , 1) and the intercept on the vertical axis of the graph is 2. It is
given that y = abx, where a and b are constants.
(a) Express log y in terms of a, b and x.
(b) Hence, find the values

Solution
(a) y = mnx (b) From the figure, n > 1.
When x = 0, y = 9. ∴ log3 n > log3 1

m=9 Slope of the required graph = log3 n > 0
∴ y = 9nx Intercept on the vertical axis of
