ABSTRACT
Dross is a mass of solid impurities floating on low melting point metals. Zinc
dross is obtained from galvanizing plant due to providing coating on steel.
Zinc dross is a secondary source to produce zinc. Means we are using a waste
material that cannot be reusuable. A process based on direct electro refining
of zinc containing waste, used as anodic feed material may be considered an
attractive route to produce zinc powder. This investigation deals with the
production of electrolytic zinc powder from zinc dross in an alkaline medium
by using it as anodic feed material. The zinc dross obtained from galvanizing
plant was examined for micrographic and chemical analysis. It was found
that mostly zinc is present in metallic state with some amount of zinc-iron
locking. In an electrolytic cell, various parameters such as current density,
current efficiency, voltage and concentration of electrolyte etc. have been
studied It had been noticed the deposition of powder at different current
densities, the impressed voltage, electricity consumed, and efficiency.
Our aim is to produce the zinc powder containing iron content less than
0.02%. Because produced powder should be utilized in paint industries. High
amount of iron content decreases the lustrous of paint and gives a dull
look,that will not impress customers.
