INTRODUCTION:
This learner’s material was provided for you to cope up with the different
learning activities as a remedial. It provides texts, literary pieces, grammar activities, which
are relevant, meaningful, and will surely take you to real life situations.
This aims to develop and improve your reading, writing, vocabulary, literary,
and grammar skills. The integration of these skills will deepen your understanding of how
you can enrich your life.

LESSON 1: Coping With Challenges


Objectives: At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
a. Use synonym of words to clarify meanings
b. Use contractions proficiently
c. Use effective ways of coping with challenges to enhance one’s self; and
d. Show appreciation for the significant human experiences.

TASK 1: SYNONYMS

Synonym: one of two or more words in the same language which


have the same or nearly the same meaning.

Example: pretty- beautiful

Few- little

Boy- Male

Choose the better word: Underline the synonym that fits the meaning of each sentence.
1.My aunt collects (aged, antique) furniture.
2.Our top 1 in class has a (shiny, brilliant) mind.
3.The DRRM school coordinator showed a (picture, tally) of the earthquake casualties.
4.My mother cooked fried hot dog and egg for (breakfast, dinner).
5.The students who won in the spelling contest was (recognized, called) during the
culminating day.
Task 2: Remember the essential question, write temporary answers:

How do I cope up with the challenges in life?

Reading the text: Read the poem “Mother to Son” and comprehend on the
questions that follows.

Mother to Son

Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair

WRITING RIGHT! : On Using Contractions

Contractions: This is a way of shortening words through deleting one letter and replacing an
apostrophe (‘).

Example: They are- They’re Dancing- Dancin’

LESSON 2: On using Adverbs


Objectives: At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
a. Familiarize yourself in the different types of adverbs, and its use in a sentence;
and
b. Use adverbs in writing a coherent sentence

Let’s Recall!

Adverb- a part of speech that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. There are
several types of adverbs:
1.Adverb of time- tells when. (example: today, last week, etc. or even the specific time ex:
8:30 am)

2.Adverb of place- tells where. (example: here, inside, beside, under, etc. or even the specific
place ex: school)

3.Adverb of Frequency- tells how often an action was done (example: usually, sometimes,
etc.)

4.Adverb of Manner- tells how an action was done and regularly ends in –ly (example:
honestly, loudly, slowly, etc.)

YOUR TASK : Identifying types of Adverbs- Underline the adverb used in the
sentence, and on the blank before the number, write what type of adverb was used,
number one was done for you. 

LESSON 3: Elements of Prose


Objectives: At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
a. Analyse literature as a means of valuing other people and their various
circumstances in life
b. Distinguish the features present in a prose; and
c. Express appreciation for sensory images used in a text.

Core Message: Learn the value of understanding the importance of empathy, fairness, and
justice in dealing with others.   

Take Note!

Prose- can be fiction (imagination) or nonfiction (real) stories of specific human


experiences. It has different elements:

1.Characters- they are the main part of a story, the doer of action.

2.Setting- tells when and where a story happens (time and place)

3.Theme- gives the central message of a story

4.Conflict- shows the problem in the story

5.Plot- summarizes the story, it has 5 parts (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action,
and resolution)

Task 1: Read the story “The Lottery” on pages 149-157

Task 2: Picking Out Optical Illusions- Identify the sensory images in the story of The Lottery and
explain how these images help make the story realistic. Write your answer in a paragraph form.

Task 3: Prose in Process- Identify the elements of the story that you have read by filling in the
graphic organizer below.
