1.0 Describe the operation of data networks

1.1 Describe the purpose and functions of various network elements

Router — a device used to connect one network with another. It can serve many purposes,
including connecting an internal network to the Internet.

Switch — a device that allows computers to communicate as if they were directly connected
to one another. It produces a virtual connection between the computers.

NICs (network interface cards)

1.2 Use the open system interconnections (OSI) and transmission control
protocol or internet protocol (TCP/IP) models to explain how data flows in
a network

Demonstration of Wireshark (Packet sniffer)

1.3 Describe the purpose and basic operation of the protocols in the OSI
and TCP/IP models

A protocol is a set of communication rules. For example, when you mail a letter, you follow
a protocol to correctly address the envelope. In data communications, protocols define the
details of how each task is performed. The objective of the OSI and TCP/IP models is to show
the division of tasks needed to communicate on a network.

1.4 Identify and correct common network problems at layers 1, 2, 3 and 7

using a layered model approach

Cable-physical layer 1
Half the computers in the room (all on the same network cable) can get access to the
internet, and half cannot. How to check and solve the problem?

DHCP supplied by Router and DHCP supplied by Server, with both DHCP turned on, hence
some computers are getting their IP addresses from the Server, whereas others are getting
theirs from the Router.

Layer 2

Layer 3

2.0 Implement a small switched network

2.1 Select the appropriate media, cables, ports, and connectors to connect
switches to other network devices and hosts.

The Server

2.2 Explain network segmentation, basic traffic management and basic

switching concepts.

Switches segment network as shown below.

2.3 Perform, save and verify initial switch configuration tasks.

2.4 Verify network status and switch operation using basic utilities.

2.5 Implement and verify basic security for a switch.

Step 1  Verify that no devices are connected to the switch, because during Express
Setup, the switch acts as a DHCP server. If your PC has a static IP address, before
you begin you should change your PC settings to temporarily use DHCP.
Step 2  Connect the AC power cord to the switch and to a grounded AC outlet. The

power-on self-test (POST) begins. During POST, the LEDs blink while a series of
tests verify that the switch functions properly.

For a DC-powered switch, see the "Connecting to DC Power" section for wiring
instructions.
Step 3  Wait for the switch to complete POST. It might take several minutes for the
switch to complete POST.
Step 4  Verify that POST has completed by confirming that the SYST and STAT LEDs are
green.
Step 5  Press and hold the Mode
button for 3 seconds. When all
of the LEDs above the Mode
button turn green, release the
Mode button.

If the LEDs above the Mode

button begin to blink after you
press the button, release it.
Blinking LEDs mean that the
switch has already been
configured and cannot go into
Express Setup mode. For more
information, see the
"Resetting the Switch" section.
Step 6  Verify that the switch is in Express Setup mode by confirming that all LEDs above
the Mode button are green. (The RPS LED remains off on some switch models.)
Step 7  Connect a straight-through
Category 5 Ethernet cable (not
provided) to any 10/100 or
10/100/1000 Ethernet port on
the switch front panel and to
the Ethernet port on the PC.

Step 8  Verify that the LEDs on both Ethernet ports are green.
Step 9  Wait 30 seconds.
Step 10  Launch a web browser on your
PC. Enter the IP address
10.0.0.1 in the web browser,
and press Enter.

5.0 Implement and verify WAN links

5.1 Describe different methods for connecting to a WAN

5.2 Configure and verify basic WAN serial connection

A WAN interface card is a specialized network interface card (NIC) that allows a network
device such as a router to connect and transmit data over a Wide Area Network. A WIC has a
built-in channel service data unit (CSU/DSU) interface to connect to a digital circuit and
provide error correction and line monitoring.

A WIC is usually inserted into an expansion slot in a network router.

There are also CISCO HWIC's (High-Speed WAN Interface Cards) for data transmissions
and CISCO VWIC's (Voice WAN Interface Cards) for both voice and data transmissions.

6.4 Identify and resolve common routing problems

Router problems:
Depending on the router, you can connect to it using:

 Console Port
 Using SSH or Telnet
 Auxiliary port

Auxiliary and Console are physical ports present on a cisco router.

Now use of auxiliary port in configuring a cisco router.

There are situations when you cannot reach the router or it may be in a remote location,
then the cisco auxiliary port comes into action. A modem is attached to the auxiliary port so
you can dial to the modem and then configure the router.

It works in a way like this but a setting is to be done before using this method.

So how can one configure a cisco router? A Console cable! It looks like this, one end is rj45
connector and other end is an rs232 or db9 connector.

Now all the computers (most of them) don’t have a serial port so you have to use a USB to
db9 converter or one that supports your console cable.
Now when you have connected the serial console cable to the router via hyper terminal (it is
a role which needs to be installed in Server 2008).

You can also use Tera Term it is a free terminal emulator and works on Server 2008

Now make a new connection. Using hyper terminal specify the name of the connection (call
it whatever you want it). Now set the parameters according to the screenshot
