Latar belakang reading as the process of making meaning from written texts.
comprehension is the process of eliciting and making meaning through
interaction and involvement with written language. intensive reading is
useful to develop reading comprehension. reading strategy has a positive
effect on the reading comprehension proficiency of readers.
Reading strategy ameliorated the reading skill of proficient and less
proficient readers Reading strategies have a great impact on the
students. this reading strategy aims to make students more comfortable
reading easily and effectively. This study emphasized the idea that
comprehension processes are influenced by a lot of strategies.
method Activating and using background knowledge, generating and asking
question, making inferences, predicting, summarizing, visualizing,
comprehension monitoring.
Finding The finding of the study showed that the student are not just passive
receivers of information but they are active makers of meaning.
Successful readers try to apply numerous skill to grasp meaning from
the texts. This study emphasized the idea that comprehension processes
are influenced by a lot of strategies. All of these strategies work together
to construct the meaning process easily and effectively
Discussion Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that reading
material and activities must be very interesting for students in order to
understand the text easily and they must be related to the level of
students' proficiency.
Future recomendation Teachers have a big responsibility to motivate their students in reading
these materials, should be very sensitive to their learners’
comprehension difficulties, and should help their learners to modify
their views towards reading and have positive attitudes towards their
reading activities so that they can better understand the different texts.

Latar belakang Research studies on reading comprehension have revealed that reading
is a complex cognitive activity that is crucial for adequate functioning
and for obtaining information in current society and requires an
integration of memory and meaning construction . Students need to
know how to learn from reading in order to be able to enter the present
literate society and have a successful communication.
Reading has been defined as an active process in which readers shift
between sources of information, elaborate meaning and strategies,
monitor their comprehension and use the social context to reflect their
response. Moreover, it has been acknowledged that reading strategies
can be taught to learners and that reading strategy instruction can benefit
all students.
Many language learners do not read for the purpose of understanding
the writer’s message, because they have developed a wrong concept of
reading. Although many studies have focused on reading
comprehension strategies and revealed how significant these strategies
are in developing reading comprehension, it seems that in Iran’s EFL
context this issue has not received enough attention.
Method Eighty Iranian EFL learners including 42 male and 38 female
participated in the study. the participants of the study were IELTS
candidates preparing to take the IELTS test. A reading strategy
inventory was administered as the instrument to elicit information on the
learners’ use of reading strategies. a reading comprehension test from a
retired version of IELTS (International English Language Testing
System) was used in order to assess the participants’ performance in
reading comprehension. This test was appropriate to be used in the
study as IELTS is a standardized, international and well-known test
which is developed by Cambridge University
Finding study was an attempt to find out the overall frequency of reading
strategy use of Iranian EFL learners. the overall mean score
demonstrates that the participants of the study were medium strategy
users (M=3.38) as long as reading strategy use is concerned. It is worth
mentioning that based on Oxford’s [27] classification, the student whose
mean score is above 3.5 (M 3.5) is considered to be a high strategy user,
the one whose mean score is between 2.5 and 3.4 (2.5 M 3.4) is a
medium strategy user and the one below 2.4 (M 2.4) is considered a low
strategy user.
Discussion Since English is considered a foreign language in Iran, EFL learners do
not have enough exposure to English language in their daily life.
Consequently, they are forced to make their own efforts in order to
create ample opportunity to learn the target language on their own. They
try to find different ways to use and practice their English. For example,
they look for people they can talk to in English. As a matter of fact,
Iranian EFL learners are usually concerned about their grades. They
always keep on monitoring and evaluating their learning. Put it
differently, they might be extrinsically motivated to learn the target
language. They try to learn the language because they need to obtain a
good grade in order to pass the subjects.
Future recomendation Teachers can identify these strategies
through observations, language diaries, questionnaires,
interviews and so on. By doing so, teachers will be able to
assist language learners to recognize and appreciate the
power of language learning strategies in the process of
second or foreign language learning.
Students can learn to use language learning strategies to improve their
language skills. As it was found in the current study, reading
strategies can help the learner improve reading skills
and reading comprehension performance significantly.
The significant correlation between reading strategy use
and reading comprehension scores proved the point.
