Cursors Group Icon Tool Name Description

1. The document discusses various methods for selecting different parts of a structural model in STAAD like nodes, beams, and plates using different selection cursors. 2. It also explains how to perform operations in STAAD like adding, modifying, deleting, merging, and segmenting beam members as well as highlighting intersecting beams. 3. The document stresses the importance of understanding the start and end points of members for viewing analysis and design results in STAAD.

After discussing the how to create a structural model using the Nodes and Beams Table in the

DATA AREA, we will also add members using a different command from the graphical user
interface of STAAD. But before that let us learn how to select the different parts of the model
like nodes and members. There are 3 different methods that we can possibly use 1. Using the
ribbon panel go to cursors group of the Select Menu and you can see the different cursor type
being used in Staadpro
CURSORS GROUP
ICON TOOL NAME DESCRIPTION

Nodes Cursor Used to graphically select nodes.

Beam Cursor Used to graphically select beams

Plate Cursor Used to graphically select plates.

Solid Cursor Used to graphically select solids.

Used to graphically select nodes, members and elements

Geometry Cursor of the structure simultaneously.

Used in Steel Design or Concrete Design to graphically

Members Cursor select all those beams defined as a same member in the
member set up of member design, simultaneously.
Plates and Solid
Used to graphically select both plate and solid elements.
Cursor

2. is by pressing the right mouse button then look for SELECT CURSOR AND THEN SELECT
the cursor type that you wanted to use
3. is by pressing the SPACEBAR then click the icon of SELECTION GROUP and then select
the cursor type that you wanted to use.

As explained in the last lesson that Node A will act as the start node and Node B will be the end
of the beams. If you want to show the START & END point of a beam, just press SHIFT+E in
your keyboard or right click your right mouse button, click labels then put a tick mark to END
BEAMS.

Knowing the location of start and of members is very crucial when viewing the Result of
ANALYSIS AND DESIGN in staadpro. For beam result that starting node of the beams will
always be shown on the left side of the result.
Let us say we are changing the start-end position of members 7 & 8 by MODIFYING THE
INCIDENCE OF A BEAM
1. Select Beams #7 and #8.
2. In GEOMETRY TOOLS of UTILITIES tab, select BEAM TOOLS > BEAM INCIDENCE. A
Redefine Incidence dialog box will appear. Choose Switch Incidence of Selected Beams.
3. Choose OK.

If we wanted to add another members we can also do it by USING THE ADD BEAM TOOL TO
CREATE BEAMS or members.
1. On the Ribbon toolbar, select Geometry tab and then click on the Add Beam icon.
2. On the View Window, click on Node #1. Then, Node #7.
3. On the View Window, click on Node #3. Then, Node #5.
4. On the Geometry ribbon tab, click the pull down arrow. Then, select Add Beam
Between Mid-Point tool in the Beam group.
5. On the View Window, click on Beam #2. Then, Beam #8.
6. On the View Window, click on Beam #4. Then, Beam #12.
7. On the Geometry ribbon tab, select the Add Beam by Perpendicular Intersection tool
in the Beam group.
8. On the View Window, click on Node #12. Then, Beam #7.
To DELETE MEBERS Select Beams #16 & #18. Then, press Delete in your Keyboard. OR
press the right mouse button the choose CUT.

Toe merge a members Select Beams #12 & #15. Then click the icon for Merge Selected
Beam tool in the Beam Group. ALSO MERGE Beams #7 & #17 BY USING THE SAME
METHOD.

TO KNOW WETHER THERE ARE INTERSECTING MEMBERS Click THE Highlight

Intersecting Beams ICON and A new tolerance dialog box will appear, just choose OK.
Once the intersecting beams was highlighted, then select the Intersect Selected Beams tool in
the Beam Group.

Now let us Create additional beam using the ADD BEAM tool by connecting Node #11 and #10.

You can also do SEGMENTING MEMBERS in STAAD.

1. On the Geometry ribbon tab, select the  Insert Node tool in the Beam group.

2. In the View Window, select Beam #7.
3. On the Insert Node dialog box, enter the following parameters:
n=3
Then, click the Add n Points button. Click OK.
4. In the View Window, select Beam #8. On the Insert Node dialog box, click Add Mid-
point.
5. In the View Window, select Beam #12. On the Insert Node dialog box, click Add Mid-
