NURSE MIDWIFERY PRACTITIONER

Nurse midwifery practice is the independent management of care of women and essentially
normal newborns, anterpartally, intrapartally and/or gynecologically, within a health care setting
which provides for medical consultation, collaborative management or referral and is in accord
with the Qualifications, standards and functions for the practice of Nurse-Midwifery.

REQUIREMENTS FOR NURSE-MIDWIFERY PRACTITIONER


 Licensed registered nurses.
 Master’s in nursing in midwifery.

Job summary:
Nurse-midwifery practice is the independent management of care of women and essentially
normal, antepartally, postpartally and/or gynecologically, within a health care setting which
provides for medical consultation, collaborative management or referral and is in accord with the

Qualifications, standards and functions for the practice of nurse-midwifery educating and
counseling individuals and their families regarding healthy lifestyle behaviors are key
components of NMP.

Knowledge and competencies:


 Technically competent, including aseptic technique
 Skilled in basic obstetric/ neonatal assessments, patient/parent teaching
 Demonstrates professional intergrity authority, expert clinical knowledge
 Advanced specialized education
 Pharmacology/ drugs used in obstetrics and Gynecology

Skills required:
 To conduct a delivery, complex decision making skills
 Updating the knowledge and performing procedures in skillfull manner.
 Skills in handling the neonate and resuscitate if necessary.
 For referring the client, if complication arises.
 Maintaining the interpersonal relationship with the clients, family, colleagues and other
collaborative team, work efficiently in the tea.

NURSE-MIDWIFERY PRACTITIONER

ANTEPARTUM PERIOD
1. Can prescribe some medication used during pregnancy.
2. Assess the indicators of risk in pregnancy and do the appropriate interventions.
3. Assess the relevant historical data regarding the client and her family.
4. Assess physical status of women, soft and bony structures of pelvis.
5. Assess of the emotional status of the client and the dynamics in her support system.
6. Diagnosis the pregnancy.
7. Do the nutritional counseling, if required.
8. Counsel the women about the physical and emotional changes of pregnancy and prepare
the women for birth process, parenthood and change in the family constellation.
9. Do planning for the individual/ family birth experiences.
10. Do the planning and implementation of individual/ group education.

INTRAPARTUM PERIOD
1. Prescribe the medications commonly used during labor and birth after having the
thorough knowledge of medication including its effects on mother and fetus.
2. Provide the comfort and support measures used during labor and birth.
3. Assess the indicators of normal adaptation of newborn to extra uterine life and methods
to facilitate newborn’s adaptation to extra uterine life.
4. Notice the indicators of deviations from normal and appropriate interventions.
5. Make the diagnosis and do the assessment of labor and its progress through the four
stages.

POSTPARTUM PERIOD
1. Establish the material/ infant/ family bonds.
2. Prescribe medications commonly used during the puerperium, including effects on
lactation and the infant
3. Perform some common screening/ diagnostic tests during puerperium.
4. Assess the relevant historical data, client’s general status, nutritional status.
5. Observe for the indicators of deviations from normal and appropriate interventions
6. Provide appropriate anticipatory guidance regarding self care, infant care , family
planning and family relationships.

NEONATAL CARE
1. Perform the screening/ diagnostic tests for the neonate
2. Observe for the indicators of deviations from normal and appropriate intervention
3. Provide resuscitation and emergency care to the newborn
4. Refer the neonate, if neonate is not stable.

FAMILY PLANNING/ GYNECOLOGICAL CARE;


1. Assess the indicators of common problems of sexuality and methods for counseling
2. Find out the factors involved in decision making regarding unplanned or underirable
pregnancies and resources for counseling and referral.
3. Observe the indicators of deviations from normal and appropriate interventions and
diagnostic test.

As a leader or change agent, the Nurse Midwifery Practitioner demonstrates:
1. Knowledge of contemporary issues and trends in material and child health care nationally
and internationally.
2. Knowledge of standards for quality maternal and child health services.

4. Knowledge of roles and responsibilities of nurse midwifery practitioner in supporting the
legislative contributions to high quality maternal and child health services.
